July Sees Significant Revenue Boost in Pennsylvania Gaming

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) released its financial update for July, showcasing a robust rise in the state’s gaming revenues. Overall income surged by double digits year-over-year, although slight declines were noted in certain sectors such as table games, Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs), and fantasy sports.

Online Gaming and Slots Lead the Revenue Increase

According to the PGCB data, the total gaming revenue for July reached approximately $558 million, marking an 11.36% increase compared to around $501 million in the same month last year.

The most lucrative segment remained retail slot machines, which contributed $208.5 million to the total—a modest 2% rise from $204.3 million the previous year.

Conversely, revenue from retail table games experienced a slight drop, falling nearly 4% to $76.2 million from $79.4 million in July of the preceding year.

The iGaming slots category demonstrated remarkable growth, expanding by 41.3% to earn $177.2 million, making it the fastest-growing vertical and confirming the strong potential in the online gaming market.

Growth was also seen in other online segments: iGaming table games increased revenue by 4% to $48.5 million, while online poker revenue rose nearly 10%, reaching $2.5 million.

Sports betting saw a moderate 5.2% growth to $40.6 million, compared to $38.6 million the year before. Meanwhile, the VGT sector’s earnings slipped slightly by 1% to $3.5 million, and fantasy contest revenue dropped sharply by 17%, totaling $592,766.

Top Performing Casinos in Pennsylvania

When examining the performance of individual casinos, Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course led with a 30.2% gain, generating $103.5 million. The Golden Nugget and Presque Isle Downs and Casino enjoyed even higher percentage increases of 37.1% and 41%, earning $7.6 million and $12.5 million respectively.

Hollywood Casino at Penn National also ranked highest in total revenue, followed by Valley Forge Casino Resort with $88.9 million (up 19.2% year-over-year) and Rivers Casino Philadelphia at $57.5 million (up 16.6%).

At the lower end of the spectrum, Casino at Nemacolin recorded the smallest total revenue of $2.7 million, despite a respectable 12.1% increase compared to the previous year.

Regulatory Update: Potential Changes to Slot Machine Counts

In legislative developments, the Pennsylvania Senate has moved forward with a bill that proposes reducing the number of slot machines permitted on casino floors, which could impact the state’s gaming landscape going forward.
