Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake Early Reviews Are Overwhelmingly One-Sided

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

The gaming world is set to embark on a journey that started back in 2004 when the fifth installment in the “Metal Gear Solid” series was unleashed on the world. The game, known as Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, was a massive hit.

The prequel was written and directed by longtime creator Hideo Kojima, and it took players on a trip that follows Naked Snake, 31 years before the events of the original “Metal Gear” game.

Kojima told a story that has captivated fans ever since, and is now set to be released again by Konami. This time, it is known as “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.”

This is a remake that is bringing the game to modern consoles, while retaining the core gameplay mechanics from the original title. Also, there are additional quality of life improvements, visuals, and additional mechanics like crouch walking and third-person shooting that were made famous in “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots”

The trailers for the remake have been fantastic, showcasing a much more updated version of one of the greatest video games ever made. Now, early reviews for the remake have been pouring in, and they are overwhelmingly one-sided.

IGN has given the remake an 8/10 score, stating:

“While much of what I loved about Snake Eater is attached to the time and place of a boundary-pushing PS2 game in 2004, revisiting it through Metal Gear Solid Delta in 2025 came with a big burst of modernized nostalgia. It’s not an expansive or complex game by today’s standards, and so parts can be underwhelming if you’re coming from a more modern Metal Gear. But it often shows how good stealth-action mechanics can age well, and the political drama with Kojima’s signature brand of campiness is intact.”

Game Informer game the game a 9/10 and wrote.

“Metal Gear Solid Delta makes the case for its existence quickly. It smartly adheres to what made the original game great with evident reverence and makes updates only to the most crucial elements. For fans like me, it colors Snake Eater in a new light and elevates it to something better than I remembered. It’s impossible for me to objectively imagine this being my first experience with Snake Eater, but I am extra excited for those players who have always been curious about Metal Gear for this to be their starting line.”

Metal Gear Solid DELTA is a safe remake, but I don’t think I’d have it any other way as a fan.

It looks better (characters especially), plays a little better, and nothing was cut or altered. Flaws, fun, heart and all. A few little neat surprises too.

Jake Baldino says, “Metal Gear Solid DELTA is a safe remake, but I don’t think I’d have it any other way as a fan. It looks better (characters especially), plays a little better, and nothing was cut or altered. Flaws, fun, heart and all. A few little neat surprises too. Welcome to MGS fandom 🫡.”

Scott Duwe from Destructoid gave it a 9.5/10 and posted, “#MGSDeltais a must-play for @Metalgear series veterans and newcomers alike. The all-time classic has been respectfully and faithfully recreated with little interference other than gorgeous visuals and a more accessible, modern control scheme.”

GameSpot gives the game a 9/10, stating:

“Delta isn’t the first instance of Hideo Kojima’s beloved classic being updated and re-released, but it is the first complete rebuild of MGS3. It successfully modernizes visuals, tweaks game design, and updates controls so that the game sits comfortably alongside its action game contemporaries. From a content perspective, Konami has played it incredibly safe, using the same voice work and music, and leaving the story completely unaltered–effectively making Delta a one-to-one remake.”

The current Metacritic score for “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater” is 86/100. Simply put, everyone is praising the remake.

“Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater” releases on August 28 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.
