Speculation is rife over another potential shutdown of Roblox, as the platform is targeted by lawsuits and TV investigations.
Roblox is one of the biggest games in the world but despite its success, rumours are consistently percolating over whether it’s being shut down or not.
This usually comes from mere playground hearsay (it tells you something about the game’s popularity when it shutting down is the worse thing kids can imagine) but the online gaming platform has found itself in hot water recently.
A lawsuit was filed against the game earlier this month by a Louisiana attorney, claiming it facilitates ‘the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of Louisiana’s children’.
In a lengthy statement, Roblox Corporation has denied what it calls ‘erroneous claims and misconceptions’ but that hasn’t stopped rumours bubbling up over its potential extinction.
Is Roblox shutting down?
If you need the clarification, Roblox is definitely not shutting down. Definitely not anytime soon and almost certainly not ever. Apart from anything, it’s far too profitable for anything but a direct government intervention to shut it down.

The rumours appear to stem from parody accounts on X, who posted fake announcements of a Roblox shut down on September 1, 2025.
‘After careful consideration, we have decided to permanently shut down our platform,’ one fake post reads. ‘The decision comes as a direct response to overwhelming popular demand, alongside growing concerns about safety and security.
‘While this was not an easy choice, we believe it is in the best interest of our community.’
While Roblox Corporation hasn’t addressed this rumour specifically, the company has debunked similar hoaxes in the past.
In January 2020, the company wrote: ‘Let’s set things straight: Roblox isn’t ‘shutting down’. The same hoax (with a few details changed) goes around every year or two. Remember: don’t believe everything y’all read on the internet.’

Lawsuits aside, Roblox is facing mounting concerns over its child safety protocols from other angles. A Change.org petition calling for Roblox Corporation CEO David Baszucki to resign has amassed over 200,000 signatures, while journalist Chris Hansen is investigating the scandal for a TV documentary.
Launched in 2006, Roblox is a free-to-play platform primarily driven by user-created content and in-game purchases. It grew in popularity in the late 2010s, but concerns around its content moderation have led to it being banned in several countries, including Turkey, China, and Jordan.
In June this year, Roblox reached an all-time concurrent player peak of over 30 million players, so it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
