Generation Alpha: why children escape into the world of video games and create their own culture
Today’s Children
Probably the most popular movie among Generation Alpha is ‘A Minecraft Movie’. Adults have always been fascinated by youth culture, as we’ve seen throughout history. For instance, The Beatles in the 1964 movie ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ responded to questions about their hairstyle with ‘Arthur’.
However, modern adults still struggle to fully understand the culture of Generation Alpha – children born between 2010 and 2024. They differ in their fragmentation, as monolithic culture has become outdated. Adults no longer watch just one show, and children often don’t watch them at all, instead opting for short videos on their phones. The sources of entertainment have multiplied, and each child can consume various content.
Children No Longer Depend on Mass Media
Children have always been independent in their choice of entertainment and have shown a unique style in perceiving pop culture. Previous generations had their cultural arbiters, who somewhat controlled their preferences.
Today, companies still create hits sometimes. But children no longer need to rely on these companies for entertainment. Parents may restrict screen Time and control devices, but children know how to circumvent these restrictions quite skillfully.
Summary: Modern youth, Generation Alpha, is characterized by its independence from mass media and a preference for short videos of their own choosing. Adults do not always understand their culture, which differs from previous generations.
