If you look up the word “hype” in the dictionary, Hornet’s face should automatically pop up. Because we’ve been eagerly awaiting this moment for several years, and now, after the disappointment of not seeing it at Gamescom 2025’s Opening Night Live, Hollow Knight: Silksong has just confirmed its release date: September 4, 2025. That’s it, we can now put away—or throw away—the nose, wig, and clown makeup, because getting excited on the eve of each event and being left looking foolish is over.
If Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 seemed like the favorite to win GOTY 2025 in the spring, summer brought with it a tough rival in Donkey Kong Bananza. And now that we know when Silksong is coming out (again, September 4), it’s not entirely clear whether a duo consisting of Sandcastle’s JRPG and Nintendo’s adventure will be enough to prevent the most anticipated game of the last five years from taking the prize at the upcoming Game Awards. We’ll find out next December.
Initially, Team Cherry had planned to work on another expansion for Hollow Knight, but things got so out of hand that it turned into a full game. And it’s a complete game, because Silksong will put us in the shoes of Hornet, who must complete a new mission in an unprecedented kingdom where more than 150 new enemies and bosses, allied characters, and endless secrets await us.
