Will the DC Universe ever get any canon video games? James Gunn gives fans a disappointing update on the interactive side of their burgeoning franchise.
There were a lot of exciting announcements when James Gunn first revealed the slate of projects for the brand new DC Universe. However, perhaps the most exciting and shocking element revealed was that there were plans for canon video games to be produced by internal teams at Warner Bros. Games. This would be a new frontier in the world of multimedia franchising, at the very least for a franchise this massive.
However, all these years on, there’s still been no updates on any games taking place in the DC Universe. While Gamescon did confirm that a new LEGO Batman game is set to release next year, that was specifically created through combining canon of prior film incarnations of the Dark Knight. This has left many to wonder if James Gunn simply gave a hollow promise in that initial slate.
Are DC Universe Games Coming?
Yet with the lack of DC Universe games at Gamescon, James Gunn finally gave fans the update they’ve been waiting for (even if it’s not the update they wanted). When speaking about the lack of games set in the DC Universe, Gunn admits that they’re a tad behind the eight ball due to some corporate restructuring. However, he assures that games are very much in the works.
“There’s been some slight movement on different things,” Gunn told Gamesradar. “We have a couple of little DC games coming out. But we also have talked about – and in early stages of planning – some bigger things. One thing in particular I’m excited about, but it does take time. There’s been some changes in Warner Bros. Games, and so we’re dealing with new people.”
While an aspirational update, it likely means that fans shouldn’t expect a game set in the DC Universe for at least three years. Perhaps the most bold move James Gunn could make is un-cancelling the Wonder Woman game by Monolith Productions, reworking it to now be a game set in the DC Universe using the existing assets. Though given Batgirl has yet to be revived, fans shouldn’t hold their breath for it.
