Flemish games sector continued growth in 2024

The Flemish gaming sector had a strong 2024, the Flemish gaming federation Flega announced on Wednesday, based on the latest annual figures. Turnover rose by 20 per cent to 70 million euros in 2024.

That rise is both due to several new projects that became hits, as well as larger titles that continue selling, such as Baldur’s Gate III. Employment in the sector also increased by a fifth to 674 full-time jobs. The number of companies in Flanders, meanwhile, rose from 113 to 128, a new record.

The positive figures is good for the region as a whole, Flega general manager Natascha Rommens writes in a press release. “The market of Flemish game developers is a 99% export market and thus strengthens the regional position on the world map.”

A risky business

But making video games is a “risky business,” according to Rommens. “The challenge for the government lies in creating a fiscally favourable climate that can ensure a strong, sustainable sector in Flanders.”

That is why the sector federation is once again calling for the creation of a “fiscally favourable climate” to support further growth. This is in order to “put Flanders on the map as an important player in the international game industry,” Rommens says.

The fact that the Flemish gaming sector is doing well is also evident from the record number of 28 companies attending Gamescom in Cologne this year. Flemish Media minister Cieltje Van Achter is also making an appearance.

Gamescom takes place this year from 20 to 24 August. For the first time, Flanders and Wallonia will have separate booths. This is because Wallonia is mostly showcasing small projects, while Flanders has several larger studios.
