Poundland to shut another Kent branch

Another Kent Poundland branch is set to shut next month.

The discount retailer’s location at Swanley Square Shopping Centre will be closing its doors on September 28.

It’s one of 68 stores identified for closure as part of Poundland’s “restructuring and recovery” plan.

A spokesperson for the chain said: “Colleagues working there were briefed some weeks ago about the store’s status.

“Work is underway with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles, and we understand how disappointing the closure will be to both them and customers who regularly shop there.”

Last month, it was announced that the Poundland branch at Marshwood Retail Park in Canterbury will close on August 24.

The British company also confirmed its store at Rainham Shopping Precinct will shut on the same day.

In total, 25 Poundland shops will cease trading this month (August) as part of a recovery plan designed to return the business to growth.

That plan, which launched in June, comes after what it described as an “extended period of under-performance”.

However, the former store in Canterbury’s St George’s Street reopened on August 1.

The announcement came just days after Poundland bosses confirmed its branch in Grosvenor Road, Tunbridge Wells, would close on August 10.

The discount chain also shut its store in Broadstairs in June, while also closing its Gravesend town centre branch in early May.

But following its acquisition by Gordon Brothers in June, the retailer also announced plans to shut two of its UK warehouses alongside 68 stores after Pepco Group sold the discount chain for £1.

The court-sanctioned restructuring and recovery process which Poundland launched applies to creditors in the UK.

It does not cover Poundland’s store operations in the Republic of Ireland and Isle of Man, where it trades as Dealz.
