Batman is back.
The iconic superhero is returning to the video game spectrum, as DC and Warner Bros. announced “LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight” at gamescom in Cologne, Germany on Tuesday.
Developed by Telltale Games, the announcement came with a two-minute plus trailer, showcasing Batman taking on some of the most popular villains in his rogues’ gallery: The Joker, Penguin, Bane and more.
“This game brings together nearly every facet of his legacy, letting you experience the full range of what makes Batman iconic,” said Jim Lee, president, publisher, and chief creative officer, DC in a statement. “Built with incredible care, creativity, and deep respect for the mythos, TT Games has crafted a love letter to the world of Batman.”
An exact release date has not yet been revealed, but it will come out in 2026. It will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
The story in “Legacy of the Dark Knight” will focus on Bruce Wayne’s journey that is parallel to the characters played by Christian Bale and Robert Pattinson in films. The trailer played off some of those scenes, including Penguin’s chase scene from 2022’s “The Batman.”
Some of Batman’s playable partner characters will include Robin, as usual, and Commissioner Gordon and Catwoman. Gordon’s foam sprayer and Catwoman’s whip are among the tools at each character’s disposal.
To up the stakes for players, the game will include the new Caped Crusader enhanced difficulty setting and an even more challenging Dark Knight option.
Batman had a trilogy of LEGO games released from 2008 to 2014, with the third game literally going beyond Gotham, as the title suggested, tapping into different DC universes and planets involving the Lanterns and more.
But “Legacy of the Dark Knight” will return the character to its Gotham roots, as players will be able to explore an open-world map and drive around in the Batmobile, among other likely automobile unlockables.
Telltale Games first ventured into the open-world LEGO format with its 2022 release of “LEGO Skywalker: The Skywalker Saga.” Players could explore 20-plus planets mentioned in the “Star Wars” movies, though the exact size of the Gotham map is not yet known.
In the 2018 “LEGO DC Super Villains” game, the map featured an intertwined Gotham and Metropolis, along with smaller explorable locations such as Smallville, Arkham, The Swamp and more.
More details will be announced as the game’s release date approaches.
Fans are getting another peak at Robert Pattinson’s voice as Batman. On Thursday, DC released a six-second teaser for the upcoming “The Batman” film. The short clip only features footage of the Bat Signal lit up in red but also showcases Pattinson’s take on the superhero’s voice.
