Fortnite is one of the greatest examples of success—if not the greatest—within the gaming-as-a-service landscape. Originally launched in 2017, it has been regularly updated to evolve into a full-fledged metaverse, with collaborations as diverse as El Chapulín Colorado and the Power Rangers. Now, in 2025, it will receive a major update aimed at saving storage space for its players: Epic Games is rolling out a new patch that will make the game more modular than ever, so that players will only need to download the modes they want to play instead of the entire game.
Fortnite will soon undergo the biggest change in its history: everything we know about the thin client
The Fortnite thin client is a feature that Epic Games is developing to reduce the size of the game on users’ devices, whether consoles, mobile phones, or PCs. The idea is to offer a very basic version of Fortnite, with only the lobby, the store, and cosmetic items that can be installed quickly, and then each player can choose which additional game modes they want to install separately, such as Battle Royale, Zero Build, Creative/UEFN, LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite Festival, or Rocket Racing.

Epic Games’ original plan was to launch this lightweight Fortnite client in October 2024, but due to unforeseen problems, this ambitious project was delayed by a year, and this feature is expected to be ready for one of the game’s upcoming updates, which could arrive in mid-September 2025 at the latest. In other words, this revolutionary feature would be ready along with one of the game’s upcoming patches.
As the years have passed and Fortnite has expanded its range of game modes, such as those mentioned above, this has posed a serious problem for both casual players and those interested in one or a few aspects of the game. The size of Fortnite on storage devices has increased dramatically with each patch, reaching 140 GB in the latest PC version, which has forced many to reserve space on their hard drives specifically for Fortnite, having to decide which other software or games to delete.

The arrival of Fortnite’s thin client will be the biggest update in the game’s history in terms of quality of life improvements. After its implementation, all PC, console, and mobile users will have greater control over the content to be installed, which will not only result in shorter loading times and waiting times, but also considerably less disk space, allowing other games to be installed in addition to Fortnite.
