The industry is so focused on remakes and remasters right now, taking games from the past and giving them a modern coat of paint. But we’re all suckers for nostalgia, and by the time we reach our twenties, we’re already reminiscing about how everything was better when we were kids. Naturally, this means a whole lot of us are nostalgic for the early 2000s right now, and the charm that came from the graphical limitations in video games at the time.

These Oblivion Mods Make Oblivion Look Like It’s On PS1

“I was having a great time with the Remaster, but when it dawned on me that it was essentially a reskin, I wanted to try my best to push the graphics in the other direction, taking ‘I Want Shorter Games With Worse Graphics and I’m Not Kidding’ to heart,” says Reddit user mufb. “I found Oblivion [Unmastered], which crunched all of the textures to PS1-esque levels, but I still wanted to go further.”

They then go on to explain all of the other changes they made to their game alongside the Oblivion Unmastered mod to give us something that looks even more retro. The only way this could possibly be improved is if it opened on an FMV of the Emperor’s monologue, although Daggerfall did get there first.

Better yet, mufb also shared a soundtrack to go alongside this demake – retro covers of the original soundtrack. I now fear that the 8-bit rendition of the main menu music will be in my head for the rest of the weekend.

So, if Oblivion Remastered’s take on Cyrodiil is just a bit too 2020s for you, this is the perfect way to turn the clock back a couple of decades and bask in some PS1-era goodness. No, we just have to track down a CRT to make everything all the more authentic.
