The 28-year-old midfielder featured for less than ten minutes before going down in visible pain.

Spurs have now confirmed Maddison is set to undergo surgery before starting his recovery.

“We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee,” the club said in a statement.

They added: “His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team.

“Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way.”

The injury is expected to keep Maddison sidelined for most of the upcoming season.

Maddison was sidelined towards the end of the 2024/25 campaign with a knee issue.

He missed their Europa League final win against Manchester United as a result.

In the season before, he missed a large chunk of matches with an ankle injury, but returned in time for the run-in.

Spurs begin their season on Wednesday in the Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain, live on talkSPORT.

What Frank said on Maddison

After the friendly against Newcastle, Frank expressed his concerns with England international Maddison.

“Sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal,” he said.

“That’s what we got today. It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players.

“We’re pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before.”

Reacting to the news on talkSPORT Scott Minto said: “That’s horrendous, for him personally.

“I’m sure he’d be looking at this season and thinking what a great opportunity to be mixing it with the big boys of Europe and playing in the Champions League.

“And really proving to a new manager. He didn’t seem to play many games or last 90 minutes under Ange [Postecoglou].

“I’m sure he was desperate to prove himself to Thomas Frank, so that’s a massive blow personally, first and foremost, but for the team as well.”

Spurs may now be set to sign a replacement for Maddison this summer.

They have held interest in Jack Grealish and Harvey Elliott, but they are linked with Everton and RB Leipzig respectively.

Eberechi Eze has been another target, although their north London rivals Arsenal have held talks with his camp.
