Plans to reopen landmark pub with added B&B

Plans have been revealed to reopen a landmark pub with an added B&B.

If given the green light, The Aviator in Minster on the Isle of Sheppey could undergo a refurbishment which would see 10 guest rooms added to the property, plus a garden room extension, reception, and breakfast room.

An application for the empty site, just off the A249 in Queenborough Road, has been submitted to Swale council by owners Mehmet and Elvin Susgun, who run Turkish restaurant Mem’s Mezze in nearby Halfway.

The duo bought The Aviator pub earlier this year for £640,000 after it shut in January 2024 and vowed to give it a new lease of life.

Speaking to KentOnline in April, Elvin said the couple planned to keep it running as a pub, and it would create around 20 jobs.

Now, a planning application sent to the local authority outlines plans to introduce 10 new rooms to the property and increase the number of parking spaces from 27 to 30.

The number of cycling spaces would also be expanded, but disabled parking would be cut from three to two spaces.

The application states the plans would provide work for four full-time and six part-time staff.

If approved, the business would operate from 10am to 12.30pm.

Formerly known as the Lady Hamilton, the establishment re-opened as The Aviator in 2007.

During the pandemic, an outside bar in the car park was converted into a drive-thru for takeaway food.

The following year, the pub evolved again to become a fully-licensed wedding venue.

However, it was put up for sale last January after the then-owners said “ever-increasing” bills had forced it out of business.
