Umbrella, a leader in independent film, is expanding into the interactive world with the launch of Umbrella Gaming, its new video game distribution arm.
Umbrella, a prominent independent film distributor operating in Australia and New Zealand, has announced the official launch of Umbrella Gaming, a new distribution division dedicated to supporting and releasing independent video games throughout the Australasian region.
The formation of the new division follows Umbrella’s recent rebrand, reflecting the company’s move into the interactive entertainment sector. According to Umbrella, this development represents a significant evolution in its business strategy as it seeks to expand beyond traditional film distribution.
Umbrella Gaming’s first acquisition is Pro Jank Footy, described as an absurdist, comedy-inspired take on Australian Rules Football. The title has been developed by David Ashby (known for Danger 5) and Tyler Roach (formerly of Mighty Kingdom), produced by Cam Rogers, and features in-game commentary from Broden Kelly of Aunty Donna. According to Umbrella, the game draws on local football culture, incorporating irreverent humour and stylised, lo-fi gameplay. Pro Jank Footy is set to be publicly showcased at events such as PAX Australia and SXSW Sydney in 2025, with a global release targeted for 2026 on platforms including PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
POWERBOMB GAMES director David Ashby said:
“When we set out to make Pro Jank Footy, we decided on two things. One, make a fun and chaotic retro throwback of Australian Rules Football. And two, keep the production an Australian story. Umbrella recognise the plethora of talent we have in this country, as we are one of many developers making weird and wonderful games that truly have appeal at home and abroad. We’re humbled to be their first.”
According to the company, Umbrella Gaming intends to provide support for independent developers through a comprehensive suite of distribution services, including public relations, marketing campaigns, and direct liaison with platforms. The company claims its approach is designed to reflect the traditional film distribution model, giving independent game developers access to professional support and broader audiences both domestically and internationally.
This entry into gaming aligns with Umbrella’s increased interest in interactive intellectual property spanning both games and films. Recently, the distributor secured Australian and New Zealand rights for Exit 8, a Japanese thriller based on the game by KOTAKE CREATE, which reportedly gained significant traction on platforms including TikTok, Reddit, and YouTube. Umbrella will release the film in both countries, citing a convergence between horror and gaming audiences.
The company has also recently acquired the psychological horror-thriller Return to Silent Hill, a new feature film adaptation of the KONAMI franchise. Co-written and directed by Christophe Gans (Silent Hill, Brotherhood of the Wolf), with music by composer Akira Yamaoka, the film is said to revisit the emotional storytelling found in the original games.
Both Pro Jank Footy and Exit 8 are scheduled to be included in the lineup for SXSW Sydney in October.
Umbrella’s General Manager Ari Harrison said:
“We’re stoked to launch Umbrella Gaming as a new home for bold, original games from Australia and New Zealand’s most creative minds. Just as Umbrella has championed independent film, we’re now bringing that same passion and experience to the world of indie games – backing distinctive voices, supporting end-to-end releases, and helping local stories reach global audiences.”
