Replica of huge 17th-century ship used to travel the globe comes to Kent marina

A full-scale replica of a 17th-century ship used by the Spanish during global expeditions is coming to another Kent marina.

The Galeón Andalucia, a 160ft long vessel with six decks and weighing 500 tons, will be docked at Dover Marina from today (August 6) for five days.

The ship, which tours the globe, has been brought to life by not-for-profit Nao Victoria Foundation, taking four years and 10 months to create, including a 16-month construction period.

It is an example of those used by the Spanish Crown during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and were a vital asset for establishing trade routes between Spain, America and the Philippines islands.

Visitors can board the “floating museum of maritime culture” and see the interactive exhibits, videos and projections of its historical journeys.

It will be open daily from 10am until 8pm, but pre-booking is needed.

Tickets for those 11 and over cost £12, and for children aged five to 10, they will be £6.

Last month the vessel was docked at Chatham Maritime.

Placemaking, events and partnerships manager at the Port of Dover, Diederik Smet, said: “The Dover Waterfront is the perfect place for exploring local culture and leisure and brings communities together from across the world in many ways to explore Dover’s key role in society and its place in the future of maritime.

“We are proud to be welcoming such an iconic ship to our marina and look forward to seeing different generations of visitors being immersed in the wonders of the Galeón Andalucia and its inspiring story.”
