“Why the hell do I have to go into BIOS?” – that’s the most popular review on Steam for Battlefield 2042 right now, as the game got review-bombed over new secure boot requirements.
Battlefield 2042 has received hundreds of negative reviews on Steam in the first days of August, following player backlash over a newly enforced requirement: enabling Secure Boot to launch the game on PC. The change was introduced in patch 8.8.0 back in May 2025.
EA decided that Secure Boot is now mandatory to prevent cheats from loading at Windows startup, and the game will not run without it. The company shared a support article explaining how to enable the feature. However, many players still don’t understand why they need to dig into BIOS settings, as it’s not something they’ve ever done and aren’t confident doing.
“It’s the developers’ job to prevent cheating – not the players’,” wrote one of the reviewers. “If their anti-cheat system isn’t working properly, they need to find a real solution instead of pushing the problem onto the community.”

“Game’s installation is 100GB. Game says to mess with your BIOS and enable secure boot to just launch the game. Game says to redownload anti-cheat (or even reinstall the whole game again) even after installing it properly,” wrote another angry player.
