This Day in Gaming 🎂
In retro news, I’m using handlebar-on-handlebar sparks to light a 24-candle cake baked for Road Rash: Jailbreak, which brought a signature blend of street racing and roadside biffo to PS One. Unlike earlier entries, Jailbreak leaned into a more structured narrative and buddy-rider system, adding a hint of chaos-coordination to the usual chain-whipping mayhem. A mate and I played the hell out of the 2P co-op mode, though we fought over who had to ride in the sidecar.
Jailbreak’s rough around the edges game these days, sure, but there’s still a certain thrill to nudging a rival into oncoming traffic at 120kph while a soundtrack of late-90s thrash blares in your ears. Truly, this was one of those Never Should Have Died game series and its loss stings me like its titular gravel-based friction.

Nice Savings for Nintendo Switch
On Switch, Super Mario RPG isn’t just nostalgia bait, it’s a reimagining of a 1996 classic that Square Enix and Nintendo somehow made weirder and better. Broforce, meanwhile, still manages to be the most absurd tribute to 80s action films, complete with destructible everything and shouty pixel art bros.
- Super Mario RPG (-29%) – A$59 – The SNES cult classic reimagined with vibrant visuals and new mechanics. A charming, turn-based adventure that blends Mario platforming with JRPG fundamentals. No nostalgia required to enjoy.
- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (-14%) – A$69 – Smart level design and stunning visuals make this a standout 2D platformer. Play solo or co-op with friends as you barrel through frozen banana mayhem.
- Broforce (-87%) – A$2.90 – An explosive side-scrolling homage to ‘80s action flicks. Ridiculously fun with my mates, and now at the kind of price that would make Rambo proud.
- Spelunky 2 (-60%) – A$11.90 – Precision platforming and roguelike chaos return. Danger lurks in every tunnel, but so do riches, secrets, and plenty of ways to accidentally die in hilarious ways.
- Ghostbusters: The Video Game Rem. (-75%) – A$14.90 – Features voice acting from the original cast and an authentic continuation of the classic films. I rank the tale it tells higher than anything after Ghostbusters 2.

Pure Scores for PlayStation
PS5-wise, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora may not have rocked the sales charts, but exploring its lush, Na’vi-friendly world in first person is a visual treat. And Sonic Frontiers may be a mess on paper but in practice it’s one of the fastest, weirdest and most experimental 3D Sonics I’ve played in years.
- Battlefield 6 (-19%) – A$89 – Massive maps, wingsuits, and tactical carnage. This one is aimed at fans of big, explosive multiplayer set pieces with plenty of firepower and fury.
- Mafia: The Old Country (-12%) – A$79 – Old-school mob drama and trenchcoat action. Tense driving, shootouts, and a fresh family saga in 4K noir style.
- PGA Tour 2K25 (-51%) – A$59 – Refined physics, detailed clubhouses, and a solid swing mechanic. Grab your digital driver and chase the green in 2K’s top-tier golf sim.
- Samsung 990 2TB SSD (-32%) – A$223 – Blazing-fast PCIe 4.0 speeds, PS5-compatible out of the box, and includes a built-in heatsink. Great for expansions or future-proofing your storage.
- Sonic Frontiers (-70%) – A$29.90 – Sonic finally goes open-world(ish). Speed, puzzles, and boss fights across giant zones. A bold experiment IMO with satisfying momentum and platforming.
- Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (-70%) – A$32.90 – Explore a lush alien world in first-person. Climb banshees, shoot humans, and try 2P co-op (with another copy) that I quite enjoyed.
PS4
- Ghost of Tsushima Dir. Cut (-18%) – A$89.90 – I adored this samurai’s tale with stunning Kurosawa-style visuals, sharp combat, and a new island expansion. Honour, stealth, and a cinematic revenge? Hai!
- GTA The Trilogy Def. (-71%) – A$29 – Three iconic crime sagas, reworked with updated controls and questionable visuals. Still good for chaos, nostalgia, and hearing “Hey, I know that song!”
- Slay the Spire (-66%) – A$10.50 – Deckbuilding meets roguelike in one of the genre’s finest. Every run offers new combos, risks, and decisions. Hugely replayable and surprisingly strategic.
