Despite the stumbles Marvel has faced in recent years with the MCU, the characters created by the House of Ideas have not ceased to have strength, and the world of video games remains a great way to appreciate them from new perspectives. A few months ago, Tribute Games and dotemu revealed to the world their next project: a new beat ‘em up inspired by the Marvel Comics universe. And after their excellent work with TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, it was impossible not to be interested in what they have in their hands. After a brief presentation, we had the opportunity to play a short demo of what awaits us in MARVEL Cosmic Invasion.
Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes
Although our time with the demo was brief -about 20 minutes going through the first two levels of the game- it was enough to learn more about its story and the interesting mechanics that not only give it some new air, but also takes advantage of the essence of each of the characters. As its name suggests, the game revolves around an alien invasion led by Annihilus. Marvel Cosmic Invasion will feature a total of 15 playable characters, including both Earth heroes and cosmic figures from the Marvel universe.
In this demo, we were able to choose between two of the nine available characters. Among them were Captain America, Spider-Man, Storm, Rocket, Nova, Wolverine and She-Hulk. Each character has unique abilities and different play styles, promising variety and strategy in every game.

All the classic beat ‘em up mechanics are present, but with a clear Marvel touch: from Captain America throwing his shield and Spider-Man using his web to swing, to Venom using his strength to grab enemies with a brutal grip and Wolverine digging his claws into anyone who lets him. Each character has normal and strong attacks, the classic special attack, as well as a system that allows us to use our second character as an assistant, or swap them out entirely. The interesting thing is how each one feels like a completely different being, and knowing how to complement each other is key to progress.
The initial levels took us from the streets of New York to a Helicarrier, as the minions of Annihilus began their offensive. The game’s art is spectacular. If you are one of those who think pixel art is worn out and detest huge pixels, this game might change your mind. The details and winks present in each scenario are meticulously worked, and you can see the care with which this title has been developed.
