Journalists across Kent have been paying tribute to one of the county’s most respected former newspaper editors who has died aged 80.
Brian Lewis worked for the Kent Messenger Group for 34 years, leading its Kentish Express edition for two decades.

He was renowned for his unflappable, professional approach, good nature and wise stewardship.
Brian lived in Ashford with his wife of 54 years, Gloria and died on Monday, July 28 after a long illness.
He also leaves their two daughters, Joanna and Julia and six grandchildren.
Brian began his career in journalism on the former Ramsgate-based East Kent Times in 1963.
He then had a spell on the Kilburn Times before joining the Kent Messenger in 1970 and becoming editor of the Kentish Express in 1984.
He retired just short of his 60th birthday in 2004 and then, together with Gloria, indulged their love of travel, walking holidays, motorcycle touring, music concerts and fishing.

But he also dedicated much of his time to doting on his grandchildren.
“Dad was very kind and generous person with a great sense of humour who just loved helping others,” said Joanna.
“For example, he qualified to drive a minibus so he could take residents of Strode Park on outings.”
But in recent years, his health deteriorated as he battled with dementia.
Following his death, many tributes poured in from former work colleagues who praised Brian for his many qualities, especially his calm nature, professional approach and good humour.
“I’m sure that many of you remember him for his kindness and generosity,” said good friend Ernie Mirfin.
“I’m sure he will be sadly missed but never forgotten.”
“Desperately sad news,” wrote Leo Whitlock on the Old Boormans Facebook page.

“Brian’s wise counsel and ability to nurture gave me the chance to edit the Kentish Express when he retired but also launched the careers of many young journalists. He leaves a lasting legacy and a huge hole.”
“Brian was one of the best,” adds Mary Whelan. “He was a lovely kind man, brilliant editor and a wonderful human being. I loved working for him and it’s a very sad loss.”
Brian’s death follows that another respected former Kent Messenger editor, John Evans, who passed away in March aged 91, also after a long battle with dementia.
