This year’s Gen Con was a big one for Paizo. Alongside the launch of Starfinder 2E, news of a new video game and Abomination Vaults for D&D.
Gen Con was huge this year. Paizo had a lot going for it, including the launch of Starfinder 2E. But alongside that, we got news of a new Starfinder video game and ‘Abomination Vaults’ released on D&D Beyond. And all that’s just a taste of things to come.
Starfinder: Afterlight – The First Starfinder Video Game
Party-based RPGs full of story and heart have been enjoying a second renaissance since the absolute masterpiece that is Baldur’s Gate 3. Although truthfully, the seeds of that have begun over the last several years with titles like Original Sin 2, Pillars of Eternity, and the genre-redefining Disco Elysium. But Baldur’s Gate 3 really hammered home the “hey, we’re in a new era” vibes.
And now, we’re getting a Starfinder video game: Starfinder: Afterlight. Coming to you from Epictellers, Starfinder: Afterlight is a party-based RPG video game where you’ll gather misfits from across the Pact Worlds and cobble together who you need to save the galaxy.
You know, like any good sci-fi/sci-fantasy RPG. But this one will feature the unique setting of the Pact Worlds where digital gods and cosmic dragons and magic and gravity all clash together in a delicious melange. Assemble a crew. Use the new Starfinder 2E ruleset, tactical turn-based combat – it’s a recipe for success.
“Gather your crew and venture into the Pact Worlds! Starfinder: Afterlight is a party-based RPG video game that brings Paizo’s beloved science-fantasy universe to life. Experience Starfinder 2E’s turn-based tactical combat and a story-driven narrative where choices matter.”
Abomination Vaults on D&D Beyond – And Adapted For 5.5E
But that’s hardly all. In addition to the launch of Starfinder 2E and the video game, Paizo had another big triumph. ‘The Abomination Vaults’ have arrived on D&D Beyond. If you’re unfamiliar, the Abomination Vaults is one of Pathfinder’s biggest, sprawling adventure paths. It’s a megadungeon that will take you deep within the world of Golarion.
Only, now it’s available on D&D Beyond. And not only is it available on D&D Beyond, it’s been adapted for 5.5E, the latest ruleset. This is the first time anything of Paizo’s has been converted directly to this, though we’ve seen 5E adaptations before.
Just another step in the edition evolution, you know? But it’s exciting because it means that Paizo was able to revisit some of the design, and those playing the latest ruleset for D&D will find a remastered megadungeon awaiting them.
Fortunate timing, too, because D&D Beyond announced that Maps features were rolling out for every user who owns a module on D&D Beyond. So if you snag Abomination Vaults, you’ll be able to run it with all the D&D Beyond Maps features in place.
