Heung-min Son may have just played his final game for Tottenham against Newcastle in front of his home fans in South Korea, and our player ratings are in.
Tottenham player ratings vs Newcastle United in Heung-min Son farewell
Antonin Kinsky – A solid display from Kinsky, in the second half, after he was beaten at his near post in the first forty-five by Harvey Barnes. 8.
Pedro Porro – His defending against Harvey Barnes for Newcastle United’s first goal left a lot to be desired, as Porro failed to show the winger down the line, allowing him to cut inside. He was substituted for Spence right at the start of the second half. 6.
Kevin Danso – The Austrian was really aggressive with his press high up the pitch in the Newcastle half, which led to the first goal from Brennan Johnson. 7.
Cristian Romero – It was not the most convincing of first-half displays from Romero, who often struggled to deal with the movement of Gordon. He was taken off at the start of the second half for Van de Ven. 6.
Ben Davies – It was more of the same in the second half for Davies, who looked a bit off the pace here, as Newcastle continued to find joy down his side of the pitch. 5.
Rodrigo Bentancur – After a solid first-half display, which saw the Uruguayan shield the backline while also helping in the build-up phase, Bentancur was substituted for Lucas Bergvall right at the start of the second half. 7.
Archie Gray – The young Englishman had a more advanced role in midfield in the first half, but that changed in the second half when Bentancur was subbed and Bergvall came on. In a more defensive role, Gray still looked to impress, going in for every tackle. 7.
Pape Matar Sarr – Sarr had a good chance early in the first half but failed to add to his three-goal tally so far in pre-season after striking straight at Pope. He was substituted on the 60th-minute mark, after a rather quiet second forty-five. 6.
Brennan Johnson – Aside from his well-taken goal in the first half, Johnson’s involvement in this game was minimal; he needs to be more involved in all aspects of the game. 6.
Mathys Tel – His standout moment in this tie was his spurning of a golden opportunity, where he was one-on-one with Pope, only to fire straight at the Magpies’ shot stopper. He dropped deep to link up in play and was not afraid to run the channels. 6.
Heung-min Son – The Tottenham captain would perhaps have been hoping to sign off with a goal to his name in what could pretty much be his final game in a Lilywhite shirt. In the 65th minute, however, Heung-min Son was subbed and greeted with a standing ovation from everyone in the stadium, and hugs from his teammates, as he signs off after a decade at N17. 6.
Substitutes
Djed Spence – The full-back came on for Porro and slotted right in at right-back. He barely had any overlapping to do, as he was more conservative. He did do well against Barnes on that flank. 7.
Lucas Bergvall – Lucas Bergvall replaced Bentancur and was used in a slightly advanced role, before being dropped deep when Maddison was introduced. He had a shot from outside the box early in the half, but it was straight at the goalkeeper. 7.
Micky van de Ven – Replaced Cristian Romero and in the second forty-five, he did keep a clean sheet, as Newcastle threatened less after taking off some of their stars. 7.
Mohammed Kudus – The former West Ham man replaced club legend Heung-min Son, and went down the opposite flank on the right. The Ghanaian showed his skill and trickery, getting beyond Hall and reaching the byline, but his cross did not find anyone. 6.
Yves Bissouma – The Malian came in for Pape Matar Sarr and took up the role of shielding the back four. He got a few tackles in but was booked seven minutes after his introduction. 7.
James Maddison – A first outing for the Englishman who has been out since May. He replaced Archie Gray, and slotted right into the number ten position. His return was short-lived, as the Englishman went down only to be stretchered off. N/A.
Wilson Odobert – Came off the bench for Brennan Johnson and got right into it, playing Richarlison in for a chance, but the Brazilian was offside. 5.
Richarlison – Had a good chance in the 75th minute and drew a save from Pope, although he was flagged offside. 5.
Luka Vuskovic – Replaced Ben Davies in the second half. N/A.
Yang Min-Hyeok – Replaced Maddison after the midfielder took a knock. N/A.
