Tottenham issued hands-off warning after failing to hit £52m release clause

A Bundesliga club have issued a hands-off warning to Tottenham Hotspur about their centre-back after the North London side explored a move.

Even though Cristian Romero looks set to stay at Tottenham, there is some uncertainty regarding the centre-back options ahead of the new season.

We are yet to see Kota Takai in a Spurs shirt, while sources continue to suggest that Tottenham are open to loaning out Luka Vuskovic.

That is perhaps why the Lilywhites are scouring the market for a central defender, and it turns out they have failed with an approach for a Bayer Leverkusen star.

Tottenham made a move for Piero Hincapie

It was reported a couple of months ago that Piero Hincapie had been identified by Tottenham as a potential Romero replacement.

TBR Football have now revealed that Tottenham Hotspur made an approach for the Ecuador international after Atletico Madrid refused to meet his £52.5m release clause.

Liverpool and Chelsea also enquired about Hincapie, but all three Premier League sides were told by Leverkusen that they are not willing to listen to offers for the centre-back.

It is explained that manager Erik Ten Hag has made it clear that he does not want to lose the 23-year-old this summer after Jonathan Tah left the club earlier in the window.

Hincapie reveals his stance on his future

The obvious question would be if Tottenham can get around Leverkusen’s stance by meeting Hincapie’s £52.5m release clause, thus rendering the Bundesliga club powerless to stop the player from leaving.

However, based on the centre-back’s recent interview, it is clear that he is not overly keen on leaving BayArena this summer.

When asked about the speculation over his future, Hincapie said just last week on the Rheinische Podcast: “I’m fully focused on Bayer. However, as a player, it’s always important that other clubs follow you. There are rumours, but my mind is still on Leverkusen.”
