Thomas Frank issues ‘brutal’ verdict on ‘bad injury’ for James Maddison at Tottenham

Thomas Frank has provided a fresh update on James Maddison, with the midfielder suffering yet another nasty injury during Tottenham’s final pre-season fixture in Asia.

Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-season tour of Asia has finally come to an end, with Thomas Frank’s side playing out a 1-1 draw in front of a sold-out crowd in South Korea.

Not only was it their final match in Asia this summer, it was also a tribute clash for captain Heung-min Son, who has since announced that he would be leaving Tottenham Hotspur for the first time since joining the club ten years ago.

The clash against Newcastle United also handed Thomas Frank a golden opportunity to ease back injured playmaker James Maddison, whose minutes have been few and far between since he picked up an injury back in May.

James Maddison injury blow confirmed by Tottenham boss Thomas Frank

Unfortunately, the English midfielder’s day ended in the worst possible way for the Europa League champions, as he had to be stretchered off after he pulled up from a completely innocuous lunge.

Thomas Frank has now addressed James Maddison’s situation, revealing that the England midfielder has injured the same knee as last time. The Spurs boss reportedly said Maddison has suffered “what looks like a bad injury” in a “brutal” moment for the player.

He added (Football.London): “We’re pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before.

“I think sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal. That’s what we got today. It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players.”

Spurs face midfield dilemma with Maddison and Kulusevski out

Tottenham now have ten days to go before their first competitive match against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup.

As it stands, Thomas Frank is set to go into that tie without a recognised number ten, as James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are sidelined and are set to miss out.

Frank has been trying out different possible solutions so far in pre-season, as we have seen Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr feature in that role, both of whom are better suited as number eights.

Of course, with both a risk of missing the early parts of the new season, Tottenham would now have to go into the summer market to address their number ten situation.
