Heung-min Son’s close friend, Kevin Wimmer, has now paid tribute to the forward after he called time on his Tottenham career, and he revealed what the South Korean did after he lifted the Europa League.
Tributes are continuing to pour in from across the game for Heung-min Son, who has confirmed that he will be leaving Tottenham this summer after a decade at the club.
Son’s numbers speak for themselves, and the forward will undoubtedly go down as one of the best players to grace the Premier League, but he will be remembered more by his teammates for the kind of person he was.
One former Tottenham Hotspur defender, who was closer to the South Korean than anyone else, has now revealed why this is the end of an era for the North London club.
Kevin Wimmer speaks about Heung-min Son’s special achievement
The 33-year-old developed many close relationships during his time at Tottenham, including with Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Ben Davies, Gareth Bale, Joe Rodon, and, more recently, James Maddison and Cristian Romero.
However, his first close friend in North London was Wimmer, who has stayed in touch with the forward despite leaving Spurs way back in 2017.
The centre-back, who now plays for Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia, told BBC Sport: “I’m not sure we’ll see another Sonny at Tottenham. To be at one club – especially one as big as Spurs – for 10 years in this day and age is a very special achievement. No one will ever forget Sonny.”
Wimmer reveals what Son did after Europa League win
Son proudly declared himself a Tottenham legend after lifting the Europa League trophy in Bilbao back in May, which was a long time coming.
The forward stuck with the club through thick and thin, eventually getting the reward he deserved, and Wimmer revealed that he found time to respond to his message after hoisting the trophy.
The Austrian said: “Out of hundreds of messages he received that night, Sonny still took time to get back to me. I was so pleased Sonny was finally able to get his hands on a trophy.”
