After Heung-min Son confirmed that he will be leaving Tottenham, a new report has now shed light on the South Korean’s first conversation with Thomas Frank this summer.
It is the end of an era at Tottenham Hotspur, with Son confirming that he will be leaving Spurs after a decade-long stay at the club.
In many ways, it was a fairytale ending to his time at N17, with Son captaining Tottenham to just their third European title in his final competitive game for the Lilywhites.
Thomas Frank has said that he would have loved to work with Son, but the Dane backed the South Korean star’s decision and suggested that the timing was perfect.
What Heung-min Son told Thomas Frank when he arrived at Tottenham
The Athletic have now revealed that although Son only announced his decision on Saturday morning, it had been made a while back.
The report says that when Frank was announced as Ange Postecoglou’s successor, he spoke to several senior members of the Tottenham squad.
Son informed the Danish coach then that he had decided to call time on his decade-long stay at N17.
The outlet adds that no other player at the club expressed his desire to leave to Frank, with the South Korean being the only one who wanted to depart.
Cristian Romero appears committed to Spurs
This update is significant as we have been hearing all summer from the Spanish media that Cristian Romero was really keen on joining Atletico Madrid.
However, this report from The Athletic suggests that the Argentine certainly did not push for a move, and just a couple of days ago, Romero sent a big hint that he is staying at Tottenham.
According to some sources, Romero is now the favourite to replace Son as Spurs captain, with Frank expected to make a final decision ahead of the Club World Cup clash.
