Heung-min Son has opened up about how difficult it was to tell his Tottenham Hotspur teammates about his decision to leave the club, and has revealed how it was received in the dressing room.
Spurs fans have now known for a while that the club captain is potentially on his way out, particularly with reports widely indicating over the last few weeks that Son is in advanced talks over a move to LAFC.
However, even though they were prepared for this moment, the South Korean’s emotional announcement on Friday night left many supporters distraught, given the memories the forward had given them over the last decade.
Son admitted that leaving Spurs is the most difficult decision he has had to make, and he has now opened up on how he broke the news to his teammates.
Heung-min Son admits Tottenham teammates were disappointed about his decision
It had been reported by several sources over the last couple of months that Son had hinted to the Tottenham players and staff that he might be leaving at the end of last season.
The 33-year-old has now admitted that it was not easy to break the news to his Tottenham teammates about his final decision and revealed how they reacted.
When asked about conveying his decision to leave to his Spurs teammates, the Son said (via Football.London): “I spoke with only a few guys, ones I’ve spent a long time with. Obviously, they’re disappointed, as a friend or as a teammate, you’d be very disappointed if someone decided to leave, but in a respectful way.
“Obviously, I’m very close with Ben, so we’ve spoken about the future a lot of times. Obviously, he fully respects my decision. So does everyone. What can I say? It’s very, very hard to tell my teammates because I sometimes probably spend more time with them than my family, because we’re travelling together, spending time together every single day at the training ground, five or six hours every day.
“I think we know each other so well. Everybody was disappointed, but also in a way very happy for me. That was my feeling, but I don’t know what they were actually feeling! They seemed happy but disappointed when I told them my decision.”
The perfect ending to an outstanding Spurs career
Son will undoubtedly go down as one of the biggest legends in the club’s history and arguably as the most loved player Tottenham Hotspur have had in the Premier League era.
He could not have hoped for a better ending than proudly hoisting the Europa League trophy as captain and being the leader of the side that broke Tottenham’s 17-year trophy drought.
The fact that he has decided to leave on a high note rather than continuing to play on for Spurs past his prime further enhances his legacy, and there is no doubt that the 33-year-old will always be connected to the club for the rest of his life.
