Man United ‘join the hunt to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG’… but ‘face hurdle in race for goalkeeper’s signature’

Manchester United have reportedly made an enquiry to Paris Saint-Germain about the availability of Gianluigi Donnarumma but a deal is far from straightforward.

Andre Onana has been the No 1 goalkeeper at Old Trafford for the past two seasons, following his £47.1million arrival from Inter Milan in July 2023.

Since moving to Manchester, Onana – whose last ever game for Inter was in the UEFA Champions League final – has seen his stock fall significantly.

A string of high-profile errors have led to calls for United to replace the 29-year-old, with United understood to be interested in Donnarumma, 26.

Donnarumma has just one year left to run on his current contract with PSG, where he has spent the past four seasons.

Despite this, the Italian No 1 would likely still command a hefty transfer fee, not to mention wages well in excess of Onana’s.

The Red Devils are interested in the possibility of upgrading current No 1 keeper Andre Onana

According to journalist Marc Mechenoua, United are unlikely to pursue their interest in Donnarumma any further unless they are first able to raise funds and lower their wage bill by moving on several high-earners.

United have already freed up some space in their budget this summer by offloading Marcus Rashford to Barcelona on an initial loan.

But Ruben Amorim still has several players in his squad that he would like to re-home if possible, including the likes of Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho.

Mechenoua also claims that Chelsea have contacted PSG to ask what it might take to prise Donnarumma away from Paris this summer.

Chelsea have Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and Gabriel Slonina as their main goalkeeping options at present.

Donnarumma’s most recent appearance for PSG came against Chelsea in last month’s FIFA Club World Cup final in New Jersey.

He was beaten three times as Chelsea recorded a shock 3-0 win against the European champions.

Donnarumma was then involved in a post-match scuffle along with Achraf Hakimi, Luis Enrique and Chelsea forward Joao Pedro.

Donnarumma was involved in ugly clashes with Chelsea players after last month’s FIFA Club World Cup final in New Jersey – but the Blues are now said to be interested in signing him

The start of the 2025-26 Premier League season is now just two weeks away.

Chelsea will begin the campaign with a London derby against Crystal Palace on August 17, with Man United hosting Arsenal later the same day.

United and Chelsea will meet each other on September 20 – with that fixture coming just days after the first round of league phase fixtures in the Champions League.

United will not be involved in any European competition this term – for the first time since 2014-15 – after recording their lowest finish in Premier League history (15th) last season.
