Digital Gaming Trends Spark Interest Across the Finger Lakes Community | Fingerlakes1.com

The evolution of global gaming trends continues to capture the attention of many people within the Finger Lakes region.

According to Statista, the global digital gaming market is projected to reach $282.3 billion by the end of 2025. This capture is not only being felt on a macro level, but also at the level of the communities. Building on the communities, the Finger Lakes is not particularly renowned as a gaming region, but the trends that we cover in the article can help identify the growth of gaming and the intersection of new technologies, such as digital currencies and gaming, in the region.

We cover the impact of live streaming and browser-based games powered by blockchain and look into the realm of social interactions, as well as the impact on the recreational sphere of people from within the region.

Local residents explore new forms of online entertainment

The console or mobile games are no longer the only option for entertainment in digital format. Residents are showing interest in interactive games that incorporate chance and strategy in real-time, for instance, in Seneca and Tompkins counties in Ontario. The online version of the game “plinko,” which is based on physics and is loosely inspired by a classic television game, has gained popularity in the modern arena.

The games are different, and unlike animations or well-orchestrated stories, these games prioritize real engagement and outcomes, which has attracted a different and broader set of people. The rise in popularity of “niche” games is linked to community live streaming and social media platforms that make games easy to share and play.

A local gaming community in Seneca Falls recorded a 23% growth in memberships in 2023 and projected mid-2025 figures. Many members express interest in “browser-based games that incorporate real-time outcomes.” The new and emerging interest in games that feature crypto is not limited to the youth, as people aged 35-50 are embracing technology and digital platforms for entertainment.

Cryptocurrency continues to influence digital gaming choices

Cryptocurrency has transitioned from being a speculative commodity to integrating deeply into entertainment and gaming. Over 420 million people worldwide used cryptocurrencies by mid-2025, as reported by TripleA, a cryptocurrency payments provider. A new and rising feature of some gaming platforms is their capability to allow users to engage with blockchain technology, not only for payments but as part of the gaming experience.

Community changes can be tracked as well. A Finger Lakes TechWatch survey in 2024 revealed that 37% of local respondents aged 18-34 claimed to have accessed at least one gaming site utilizing a digital currency. While some respondents appreciated the faster transaction speeds and anonymity, the novelty of cryptocurrencies in gaming also drew users.

As the number of users trying out these platforms increases, the financial or tech jargon, such as ‘wallets,’ ‘tokens,’ and ‘gas fees,’ is gradually becoming commonplace for some gaming fans. While the gaming world is not devoid of complexities, like security and user accountability, the digital world beyond entertainment, in the guise of lifestyle choices, seems to be gradually improving.

There is a growing range of gaming options in the Finger Lakes region. Community boards, online discussion groups, and local gaming conventions are buzzing with conversations about decentralized games, player-driven formats, and peer-to-peer games. For instance, the Digital Culture Collective of Ithaca witnessed a surge in participation for their “New Tech in Gaming” sessions, with attendance jumping from 20 to 42 in just six months during the early months of this year.

This interest has shifted the focus of community college students and recent graduates. The presence of universities such as Cornell and Hobart and William Smith Colleges means that students are often quick to embrace the latest shifts in technology. The recent addition of gaming labs and crypto research centers is proving to foster a more informed and active local community.

There is also a growing focus from the teaching community and parents. Even with the educational screen time divide, multiplayer, logic-driven games that require collaboration often cross the divide of traditional pedagogical concerns, garnering attention as a potential educational resource. The teaching of digital literacy is evolving from just typing and internet safety to engaging with interactive and financial systems embedded within contemporary games.

As people’s lives become intertwined with the digital age, recreational activities in the Finger Lakes region are gradually changing. Whether it’s streaming videos, partaking in online gaming events, or using entertainment apps that incorporate gaming with digital currency, tech-driven leisure is on the rise.

Local entrepreneurs are also noticing the change. Some community centers in Geneva and Canandaigua have offered workshops on safe practice, digital gaming and the cryptocurrency basics, catering to the information needs of the public. At the same time, public libraries in the region have reported a surge in interest towards lectures and workshops on blockchain and digital security, which was previously considered too niche for mainstream interest.

Although online gaming is not supplanting traditional recreation in the Finger Lakes, it is evolving to become an important addition. The cultural days of the region, which include fishing, hiking and local festivals, are still in full swing, and are now accompanied to a great extent by residents logging online, learning the mechanics of the systems behind the screens, and participating with global digital trends in a very local manner.
