Thomas Frank breaks silence on Tottenham captain decision amid Heung-min Son exit rumours

Thomas Frank’s short reign at Tottenham has seen him rely on both Heung-min Son and Cristian Romero to lead the side during pre-season, and now he has opened up on when he would decide on the club’s captain.

Heung-min Son and Cristian Romero were Tottenham Hotspur’s captain and vice-captain, respectively, under Ange Postecoglou, and with neither officially confirmed as Frank’s choice, the ambiguity remains.

A brief moment captured on video a few days ago appeared to show Cristian Romero and Thomas Frank deep in tactical discussion during Tottenham’s clash against Wycombe Wanderers, and that alone was enough for sections of the Spurs fanbase to point towards Romero as Frank’s preferred candidate.

Still, no decision has been publicly announced, but Thomas Frank has admitted that he is working through a personal checklist to help determine who will wear the armband before the 25/26 season gets underway.

Thomas Frank speaks on Tottenham captaincy call

Speaking after the friendly against Arsenal in Hong Kong, Thomas Frank was once again asked about the Tottenham captaincy ahead of the upcoming season.

Frank revealed that he is yet to settle on a final decision regarding who will lead the team into the new campaign, stressing the need to properly assess the squad dynamics and the personalities within the dressing room before making such a call.

The Tottenham boss also revealed when he would arrive at his final decision. He said (football.london): “Yeah that is to be confirmed. I have not taken the decision yet.

“I would like to understand the group of players a little bit more. I know I need to make a decision before the first official game against PSG in the Super Cup, so I will do that. It is natural that both Romero and Son are captains, so we kept it likewise.”

Romero led the team this afternoon, with Son starting on the bench as Tottenham beat Arsenal. The rotation has continued throughout pre-season, suggesting Frank is using these matches to assess the leadership qualities of both players in various scenarios.

Romero shows leadership in Arsenal clash as Son future remains uncertain

Cristian Romero was the man with the armband against Arsenal, and he did not disappoint. The Argentine defender marshalled the backline with authority and helped Spurs keep a clean sheet in the process.

Heung-min Son was introduced in the second half and played a key role in seeing out the win. So far in pre-season, the captaincy duties have alternated between the two, depending on team selection and availability.

With Heung-min Son’s future still up in the air due to interest from LA FC, and Romero likely to remain at the club, it remains to be seen whether Thomas Frank’s decision will be influenced by the long-term status of both players.
