Ipswich Town have £20m bid accepted but Tottenham still have a chance to swoop for England U21 starlet

An England U21 midfielder, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, has seen his club accept a bid for him, but the Lilywhites may still have a chance of hijacking the deal.

The mood among Tottenham fans has changed since the Morgan Gibbs-White transfer fell through, with Spurs supporters understandably keen to see the club get more players through the door as the new campaign edges closer.

It was previously reported that Tottenham are eyeing a move for Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney, who has emerged as one of the best players in the Championship over the last few seasons.

It was reported last month that Spurs were evaluating Hackney’s performances at the UEFA U21 Euros, but the rumours linking the Boro man with a move to N17 have gone quiet over the last couple of weeks.

Ipswich Town agree fee for Tottenham target Hayden Hackney

It has now been revealed by Sky Sports on their transfer blog that Ipswich have seen their £20m offer for Hayden Hackney accepted by Middlesbrough.

That represents a record transfer fee for any Championship club, but that does not mean that the 22-year-old is on his way to the Portman Road Stadium just yet.

This is because Hackney is yet to agree on personal terms with the Tractor Boys, who remain locked in talks with the midfielder’s agent.

The report adds that the Boro man is also attracting interest from several Premier League clubs.

Why Hackney may not fit the bill for Tottenham

Spurs fans will be expecting the club to sign a better calibre of player than Hackney, particularly amidst reports that Thomas Frank wants signings who are proven in the Premier League.

Reports indicate that Tottenham are eyeing the likes of James McAtee and Harvey Elliott as potential Gibbs-White alternatives.

While those players will not come cheap, it is the kind of signing that the Lilywhites will need to make for Frank to have a shot at competing in all four competitions.
