As Tottenham Hotspur continue talks with Bayern Munich over a loan deal for Joao Palhinha, a new update has shed light on the nature of the deal that the two parties are discussing.
It has been widely reported over the last week that Tottenham have set their sights on Joao Palhinha as they attempt to shore up their midfield ahead of the new season.
According to various sources, Thomas Frank is a fan of Palhinha and has told the Spurs hierarchy that the 30-year-old would be a good fit for his system.
It turns out that the Lilywhites have stepped up talks today, with the Athletic reporting this morning that Spurs have begun discussions over a loan deal for Palhinha.
Will Tottenham have an option to buy Joao Palhinha?
Sky Sports have now become the latest outlet to confirm that talks are taking place between Bayern and Tottenham Hotspur regarding the Portugal international.
Interestingly, they say that the current discussions are only regarding a straight loan deal, with no option or obligation to buy Palhinha expected to be included in an agreement.
Tottenham only want to sign the former Fulham player temporarily, but the problem is that sources from Germany have claimed that Bayern would prefer a permanent sale of Palhinha.
Why do Tottenham want a straight loan deal for Palhinha?
According to reports, Bayern are ready to sell Palhinha to Spurs for around €25m-€30m (£21.7m-£26m), but it appears that Tottenham are reluctant to pay that fee.
That might be down to the fact that the midfielder is 30 years of age and would thus not have much resale value.
2017 was the last time Spurs paid a transfer fee for a player who was 30 or older, with Fernando Llorente making the move from Swansea City to North London.
