Warner Bros. doubles down on live-service games after Suicide Squad fail

Warner Bros. Games is officially hiring for a new live-service AAA title, even after the commercial failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. A job listing for an Executive Producer at WB Games Montréal confirms the project will be based on one of the company’s iconic IPs, likely from the DC Comics universe, and will include full live-service infrastructure, from concept to post-launch operations.

What went wrong with Suicide Squad?

Released in early 2024, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was developed by Rocksteady and met with:

  • Middling reviews and fan backlash
  • Weak sales and low player retention
  • Reported losses of up to $200 million
  • Layoffs at Rocksteady and WB Games Montréal later that year

The game’s live-service model, which included seasonal content and gear-based progression, failed to resonate with players—especially given its controversial storyline and gameplay loop.

What’s known so far

The new job listing outlines a project that will:

  • Be a high-quality AAA game based on a major Warner Bros. or DC IP
  • Include live-service strategy, post-launch content, and ongoing player engagement
  • Require leadership across all phases of development, from pre-production to live ops

While the specific franchise hasn’t been named, speculation points to characters outside the Batman sphere, possibly Superman, given his cinematic resurgence, or a Justice League ensemble.

This move signals that Warner Bros. isn’t giving up on the live-service model, despite recent failures. With Hogwarts Legacy proving the value of single-player experiences, the company appears to be splitting its strategy, doubling down on both blockbuster solo titles and persistent online games.

Whether this new project can avoid the pitfalls of Suicide Squad remains to be seen. But one thing’s clear: Warner Bros. is still chasing the elusive dream of a superhero live-service hit.
