Lexar asserts that its latest SSD is so perfect for the PlayStation 5 that it even looks like the console it is supposed to be a part of. The Play 2280 SE is rated to load up to 100 AAA-rated games at “seamless” PCIe 4.0 speeds. It integrates a heat-sink and starts for under $230 via a popular vendor in the US.
Lexar has rather pointedly released its latest PCIe 4.0 SSD with a shell shaped to resemble the PlayStation 5 (or PS5) from the front, so as to present it as the perfect storage upgrade for the console.
It should be noted that the SSD is in fact a new version of its series’ flagship that has been available on Amazon for some time, albeit with a slightly reduced maximal read speed of 7,000 megabytes per second (MB/s) max read and a write speed of up to 6,000MB/s, compared to 7,400 megabytes per second (MB/s) max read and a write speed of up to 6,500MB/s in the original Play 2280.
The new variant still packs a heat-sink, and is rated as a plug-and-play addition to the PS5 without the need to move or delete existing games.
The SE is now priced at $224.99 via Costco as an online exclusive, as opposed to $249.59 for a 4TB version of its predecessor.
