Despite Poor Reviews, Horror Film Based on Hit Video Game With $50M Becomes an Instant Streaming Hit

Following the success of HBO’s The Last of Us and Five Nights at Freddy’s, even more studios were interested in adapting video games, especially in the horror genre. In 2025, it was Until Dawn‘s turn, an adaptation based on the horror game of the same name.

The movie hit theaters on Apr. 25, and was met with mixed reviews. However, it was commercially successful. Several months later, Until Dawn headed to Netflix, where it already entered the Top 10 in final place, Tudum reports.

Together stars Alison Brie and Dave Franco, who are married in real life, as a troubled couple who learn the true meaning of codependency.

Until Dawn premiered on Netflix on Jul. 24, and during its first week between Jul. 21 and 27, the horror amassed 3.3 million views and 5.6 million hours viewed. In the global charts, it was in tenth place. Until Dawn wasn’t available in all countries where Netflix is streaming, and only entered the Top 10 charts in 4 countries. One of them is the U.S., where it debuted in sixth place.

Until Dawn had David F. Sandberg at the helm. The Swedish filmmaker had previous experience in the DCEU with 2019’s Shazam! and its 2023 sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, but also with horror films, directing 2016’s supernatural horror Lights Out, and an entry in The Conjuring Universe, 2017’s Annabelle: Creation. Gary Dauberman and Blair Butler penned the script.

The survival horror based on the 2015 video game of the same name starred Ella Rubin (The Girl from Plainville), Michael Cimino (Annabelle Comes Home), Odessa A’zion (Hellraiser), Ji-young Yoo (Moxie), Belmont Cameli (Saved by the Bell), Maia Mitchell (The Artful Dodger), and Lotta Losten (Shazam! Fury of the Gods). Peter Stormare, who was part of the original video game, returns as a live-action version of Dr. Hill.

The major horror movie that was not coincidentally released on June 6, 2006, will be easier to stream than ever.

Until Dawn follows a group of friends who go into a remote valley to search for answers after one of the member’s sisters mysteriously disappeared one year prior. During their investigation, they are stalked and horrifically murdered by a masked killer, only to wake up again and find themselves trapped in a time loop, trying to find a way to escape the killer.

Until Dawn Was a Commercial Hit, But Critics Weren’t Impressed

Video game adaptations have been widely popular recently, but many of them were hit or misses. The Last of Us was a major critics’ darling, but fans disagreed with Season 2. Five Nights at Freddy’s had a poor reception from the critics when it came out in 2023, but it ended up being the highest-grossing film in the genre that year. Prime Video’s Fallout is also a major hit. 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was a major miss, and 2024’s Borderlands received abysmal reviews despite its star-studded cast.

Until Dawn failed to convince the critics either, who gave it a “rotten” score of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 114 reviews. The audience was kinder, as the film holds a 67% rating on the Popcornmeter, which is encouraging but still not great. However, this helped Until Dawn to become a commercial hit.

Produced on a budget of $15 million, the survival horror grossed over three times more than that, ending its theatrical run with $50.1 million worldwide (per The Numbers). That is more than enough to cover its initial costs and distribution costs. Now, its reign continues on streaming.
