Prime Video’s ‘God of War’ series will explore the Norse saga of Kratos and Atreus

At San Diego Comic-Con 2025, showrunner Ronald D. Moore (’Battlestar Galactica’, ‘Outlander’) revealed that Prime Video’s upcoming God of War series will be set during the Norse era of the franchise, adapting the story arc introduced in Santa Monica Studio’s 2018 reboot and continued in Ragnarök.

“It’s an epic, emotional journey of two men trying to honor the memory of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother,” Moore said. “It has heart, history, and mystery.”

What we know so far

  • The series will not be a shot-for-shot remake, but a faithful reinterpretation of the source material
  • Season 1 will consist of 10 episodes
  • Cory Barlog, creative director of the 2018 game, is directly involved as a consultant or executive producer
  • The team is currently in the scriptwriting phase, with filming expected to begin sometime in 2026
  • Amazon has already greenlit two seasons, though Moore says the focus is on building a strong foundation before expanding

Moore praised Barlog’s encyclopedic knowledge of the lore, calling him “a genius” and likening the game’s mythology to a massive novel.

Why the Norse arc?

The decision to start with the Norse saga, rather than the original Greek mythology, reflects the franchise’s evolution into a more introspective, emotionally rich narrative. The relationship between Kratos and Atreus, their journey across the Nine Realms, and their encounters with Norse gods like Freya, Baldur, and Thor offer fertile ground for serialized storytelling.
