Tottenham fans have now questioned the truth behind the Morgan Gibbs-White transfer saga, with many left in disbelief following the latest reports.
Tottenham Hotspur thought they had their man. A £60million release clause, a medical reportedly booked within 24 hours – Morgan Gibbs-White looked nailed on for a move to north London.
Yet here we are, with the 25-year-old signing a new contract that ties him to Nottingham Forest until 2028. The new deal reportedly includes no release clause and no gentleman’s agreement for a future move, essentially bringing Spurs’ pursuit of the midfielder to a halt.
Gibbs-White is set to become Forest’s highest-paid player ever. Owner Evangelos Marinakis made it clear he was not impressed with Tottenham’s approach, stating publicly: “As long as I am in charge of all of these actions, approaches should take place, I repeat, in an appropriate manner” – a thinly-veiled dig aimed at Daniel Levy and the club.
Tottenham fans question the truth behind Morgan Gibbs-White transfer saga
Tottenham must now move on from the entire saga. However, further reports have emerged that appear to explain why Spurs failed to land Morgan Gibbs-White this summer.
It is being claimed that the midfielder’s release clause was complex and that Tottenham failed to meet the various conditions required to trigger it. The suggestion is that the club did not fully satisfy the terms needed for the clause to be activated.
These revelations have not gone down well with Tottenham fans, who have taken to social media in disbelief.
One fan said: “So why the fuss. B***ocks. Marinakis was buying for time. My assumption is that Marinakis had MGW and his agent by the b***s and gave them a re-sign or be sued ultimatum. MGW looking dejected in his interview, very different from his usual, always happy demeanour.”
Another wrote: “If that were the case, Forest would have rejected outright and would not have gone through the process of threatening legal action and raising a complaint with the Premier League. They would not have also forced MGW to sign a new one-year deal that presumably scraps the release clause.”
A third fan commented: “Refuse to believe any of that, why book a medical if he never wanted to leave? None of this is right.”
Another Tottenham supporter added on the Morgan Gibbs-White drama: “If this were true, it would have come out immediately, not 2 weeks later after he signed a new deal.”
The disbelief continued, with one fan saying: “So why the threat of legal action. Just say you’ve not met all the criteria. Such b***ocks”
Meanwhile, a final fan commented: “Don’t believe this for a second. This will be the narrative being pushed from the Forest end to make it seem like they blocked it legitimately”
Spurs must now refocus after Gibbs-White disappointment
It indeed feels like a massive blow to Spurs, given how it all unfolded over the last two weeks. However, while they are left without Morgan Gibbs-White, Tottenham still do have £60 million to spend on a midfielder, and that should remain the focus of the club.
Clubs do miss out on targets, but every top side has several alternatives on its list. Spurs must now return to the drawing board and continue strengthening the squad, which is still in need of significant bolstering.
Tottenham fans have not held back, with several fans naming ten Morgan Gibbs-White replacements. It is now back to Daniel Levy and co to show ambition.
