Newcastle are in talks with Southampton over a move to sign goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, talkSPORT understands.
The 27-year-old looks set to depart St Mary’s just a year after joining from Arsenal following their relegation to the Championship.
It was the third time in Ramsdale‘s career that he has experienced the drop into England’s second-tier having also done so at Bournemouth and Sheffield United.
But the Magpies are willing to offer the five-cap England international another chance at top-flight football.
Ramsdale is believed to be keen on a move to St James’ Park.
In an added bonus for Magpies fans, Ramsdale rejected a move to their bitter rivals Sunderland earlier in the window.

Newcastle have turned to Ramsdale after seemingly missing out on James Trafford.
The Burnley shot-stopper was Eddie Howe‘s top target to provide competition for current number one Nick Pope.
However Trafford has instead chosen to return to Manchester City in a £27million deal – two years after being sold for £15m.
It’s understood that Newcastle could look to bring in Ramsdale on either a permanent deal, or a loan deal.
talkSPORT revealed last months how the Saints would be prepared to sanction a loan departure to get the player’s £100,000-a-week salary off their wage bill.
West Ham have also held interest in Ramsdale this window following the departure of Lukasz Fabianski.
But Newcastle can offer the goalkeeper Champions League football.
Man United threaten Sesko hijack
It’s not just between the sticks where Newcastle are looking to strengthen as they prepare to compete in Europe’s premier competition for the second time in three years.
Despite signing Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest in a £55million deal, bolstering the attack remains a priority for Howe.
Their need for reinforcements has only escalated with star striker Alexander Isak informing the club of his desire to seek a new adventure away from Tyneside amid interest from Liverpool and Saudi Arabia.
And they will be hoping to not lose out on another top target having been hijacked in deals to sign Hugo Ekitike, Bryan Mbeumo, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Dean Huijsen already this summer.
RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko has been identified as a possible replacement for Isak.
Though the 22-year-old could add to the ever-growing list of players they missed out on.
Newcastle have already presented an offer to the Slovenia international – and are willing to fork out around £60m to secure his services.
However, talkSPORT understands that Manchester United have now registered their interest in bringing him to Old Trafford.
Though any move for the Sesko is likely to depend on selling the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony.

As well as Sesko, Newcastle are also interested in Chelsea centre-forward Nicolas Jackson.
And they remain keen on signing Brentford marksman Yoane Wissa, who is refusing to train in his quest to depart west London.
