Over the weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, the showrunner of the upcoming God of War series for Amazon Prime is slowly, but steadily moving forward following an overhaul of the project. Robert D. Moore, who is known for his work on Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and more, spoke with a couple of media outlets at the event and gave slight updates about the show, which is the first we have heard about it in over a year.
What We Know About the God of War Series So Far
As of now, the God of War show is still very much in the early going, and we would wager that the roles for Kratos and Atreus have yet to be casted, otherwise they would have announced it at Comic-Con. According to Moore, the script for the show is still being worked on, and was uncommitted about when filming would begin. It for sure will not be this year, and he said “we will see” about the prospects of shooting in 2026.
While Moore’s first video game adaptation is still in the early works, he did say that he is quite interested in the world that Cory Barlog and Sony Santa Monica have created, going so far to call Barlog a genius. The God of War show will be focused on the Norse mythological world revealed in 2018’s God of War, and we know that the project is live action. The first season, whenever it actually comes, which at the moment seems to be 2027 at the earliest, will be 10 episodes long, with a second season reportedly already ordered as well, which we can expect to cover the events of God of War Ragnarök.
With the 2018 game being the focus here, you can also expect characters like Freya, Baldur, and the dwarven brothers Sindri and Brok to appear. As for who is going to be playing all of these characters in a live-action sense, we have no idea. Kratos, in particular, seems like a nearly impossible decision to get right, considering how large he is and how dedicated players are going to be to the accuracy of his depiction, and how close the actor can get their voice to sound like Christopher Judge.
While the Norse games are what is being featured in the God of War show, we wouldn’t be surprised to see some short flashbacks to Kratos’ time in Greek mythology. The games handled these callbacks very well, so we would expect the show to explore filling in the background info for newcomers to the story.
