But who could play B.J. Blazkowicz?
Amazon Prime Video is continuing its hot streak of video game adaptations with a TV series based on Wolfenstein. The franchise, which is set in an alternate version of World War II, will be adapted for the streaming service by the producers of Amazon’s Fallout.
As per Variety, its official logline simply states: “The story of killing Nazis is evergreen.”
Amazon gets the ball rolling on Wolfenstein TV adaptation
Amazon MGM Studios is officially developing a TV series adaptation of the Wolfenstein video games. Patrick Somerville (Station Eleven, Maniac) is currently attached to the project as writer, creator, executive producer, and showrunner. Fallout co-creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, along with Athena Wickham, will also executive produce the series via Kilter Films.
Additionally, Jerk Gustafsson from current Wolfenstein franchise steward MachineGames will executive produce the series, along with James Altman of Keyframe Films. This will be Kilter Films’ second game adaptation at Amazon, following Fallout. The latter series was recently renewed for a third season, and is currently winding up to release its second season later this year.
The Wolfenstein game franchise began with the top-down title Castle Wolfenstein all the way back in 1981, but it has since evolved into a story-heavy series of first-person shooters. Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014) served as MachineGames’ soft reboot of the franchise, reintroducing players to the adventures of William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, who fights Nazis in alt-history World War II. Five video games have been produced in this new line of continuity.
Amazon is working on multiple game adaptations on top of Wolfenstein, including TV series based on God of War, Mass Effect, and Warhammer 40,000. A second season of Secret Level is also in the works.
