4 Star Wars Legends characters I want to see get their own solo games

One of the best things about being a Star Wars fan is the amount of stories that are out there to follow and learn about. While the films and television shows have an established canon for even the most casual fan to follow, there are many more stories that go beyond the scope of those official projects. It’s known as the Expanded Universe, but was more recently given the new title of Star Wars Legends, which includes stories and characters that are not part of the official Disney and Lucasfilm canon. To many fans, this portion of the franchise includes some of the most interesting, and arguably the greatest stories within the Star Wars universe that aren’t part of the films that started everything. Within that tapestry of continuity are characters that have become super popular among Star Wars fans, prompting many to call for them to be brought into the canon.

It may not be possible to bring some of these characters into any official movies or TV shows that are part of canon, but that doesn’t mean we can’t see them in video games. As someone who wants to see more new games tackling parts of Star Wars that haven’t been explored, there are a few characters I would love to see get their own solo games. This would allow new fans to experience their unique stories and understand why so many people have loved the Expanded Universe for so long, and why some people prefer to follow Star Wars Legends stories rather than the new canon. Here are 4 Star Wars Legends characters that I want to see get their own solo video games.

4 Darth Bane

The Darth Bane novels are viewed as some of the greatest Star Wars books ever released. They tell the story of a time during the Old Republic era, when the Jedi and Sith were at war with one another, and in greater numbers. The trilogy of books takes place before the events of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, roughly around 1,000 years beforehand. Darth Bane is a man formerly known as Dessel, who becomes a Sith lord after events pull him towards the dark side and a lust for greater power. His terrible childhood and upbringing by his abusive father led to him adopting the name Bane as part of his new Sith identity.

To many fans of Star Wars, Darth Bane is known as the Sith lord who created the Rule of Two, something that is first mentioned during Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. The rule is that there can be no more than two Sith present at a time; a master and an apprentice. Darth Bane created this because of the constant infighting that was going on within the ranks of the Sith, leading him to conclude that in order for the Sith to grow stronger, he would need to wipe out everyone who was weak. The events of the book show him creating a Force Bomb that wipes out legions of Sith and Jedi alike, allowing him and a new apprentice to be the last remaining Sith alive.

Having a game that would take us through the events of Darth Bane’s origins and rise to power would be an incredible experience. Whether it was something that played like the recent Star Wars Jedi games from Respawn Entertainment, or like The Force Unleashed games. Letting us see the rise of a true Sith before the events of the movies and older games would be prime ground for a darker story. Darth Bane is not a redeemable character, and he does terrible things as a response to the horrible life he’s had up to the point when he joins the Sith. Being able to play through the series of events that lead directly into something we see that is key to the movies would be very interesting.

3 Mara Jade

Being the Emperor’s hand

Mara Jade is often considered one of the most popular Star Wars Legends characters for a number of reasons. Her direct relationship to Like Skywalker, in conflict and in romance, as well as her original unique design that is reminiscent of the original trilogy era. Mara Jade was a character that was retroactively added to some of the events that take place during Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, but her first appearance was during the events of the novel Heir to the Empire. The book was written by Timothy Zahn and detailed events that took place after the end of Return of the Jedi, with the remnants of the Empire still being a major threat to the Rebellion.

During that book and in the comics that took place after, Mara Jade and Luke Skywalker were closely associated with each other. Originally, Mara’s mission was to assassinate Luke Skywalker at the order of Emperor Palpatine, which led her to sneak aboard Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge when Luke was on Tatooine to rescue Han Solo. But as the battle took place and the Empire was brought down, Mara Jade had failed in her mission, leading her to still pursue him throughout the events of the books. Eventually, the two of them find common ground and end up marrying, giving birth to their son, Ben Skywalker.

In video games, Mara Jade has appeared as a character, but has never been the focal point of a solo game. The closest Star Wars fans have gotten to that was an expansion for the first Star Wars: Jedi Knight game titled Mysteries of the Sith. In that game, which is set about 10 years after Star Wars: Dark Forces, Mara Jade takes on missions for the Republic and becomes the apprentice of Kyle Katarn. Instead of having Mara as a secondary character for a new game, it would be great to follow her story from its beginning and how she is connected to Luke Skywalker. Maybe starting off as the Emperor’s Hand and seeing the progression from villain to hero would make for an interesting plot to follow for an action game.

If there’s one novel that most Star Wars feel is a must-read from the Star Wars Legends continuity, it’s the Darth Plagueis book. The story of the character Darth Plagueis ties directly into the events of the original six Star Wars films, acting as a prequel to the prequel trilogy, and as an origin story for Emperor Palpatine. In Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine gives an entire story to Anakin Skywalker about Darth Plagueis and he was able to master the dark side of the force and create life. While most of the story is true, although left very vague in the film, the novel gets into much more detail about Plagueis himself and how he comes to be a Sith lord. Before he met Palpatine, Darth Plagueis was the leader of the Intergalactic Banking Clan, known as Hego Demask. In secret, he trained in the dark side of the force and became a powerful Sith lord.

The Darth Plagueis novel tells a lot about events during the time of the Republic, just before the events of The Phantom Menace, and leads right into some events in the film. But before then, Darth Plagueis has many battles and exploits that speak to the inner workings of the Sith, and how the Rule of Two is followed. Other Sith lords, or pretenders as Plagueis describes, show up and challenge him as a means to becoming the one true lord of the Sith. And yet, there are plenty of other quieter moments that explore elements of the dark side and how cunning a Sith lord can be against the Jedi Order.

While Darth Plagueis himself is an alien Muun and not human, being able to play through his story would be a fascinating experience. Getting into lightsaber battles with rival Sith lords, infiltrating key locations within the Republic, and seeing the foundation of the prequel trilogy come together are perfect material for a video game. Although Darth Plagueis has appeared in some canon material, many fans don’t feel it was handled with the reverence and attention to detail that such a big character from the Expanded Universe demands. But having a video game to tell a much more in-depth story and put us in the shoes of the Sith lord himself would be a great idea.

1 Exar Kuun

Beginning the great war

When it comes to the Old Republic era, Star Wars has yet to fully explore the wealth of stories and settings that it can yield. One character from this timeframe is mentioned in canon material, but has never made the jump from Star Wars Legends continuity into canon stories. Exar Kuun is a Jedi who fell to the dark side and became a Sith lord. He is the one credited for starting the Great Sith War against the Old Republic and the Jedi Order. It was an event that devastated parts of the galaxy, with ramifications that were felt for a long time after.

Before he fell to the dark side, Exar Kuun was a Jedi knight who was always hungry for knowledge, using a double-bladed lightsaber in battle. Eventually, his curiosity and yearning for more forbidden knowledge drew him towards obsessing over it. This caused him to abandon the Jedi Order and declare himself Dark Lord of the Sith. He founded a new empire under the Sith banner and used his mastery of the Force to begin his war against the Republic. The war went on for a long time, until Exar Kuun was defeated by the Jedi Order, forcing him to use a ritual to separate his body from his spirit. However, his spirit was trapped in a temple on the planet Yavin 4, where he later tried to terrorize Luke Skywalker and his new Jedi Order as a phantom.

As one of the first major Sith lords in The Old Republic era, it would be very neat to play and follow Exar Kuun as he rises to become a Dark Lord of the Sith. Because the era in which he comes from is more than 4,000 years prior to the official canon films, there could be a lot of room for creativity in a video game for how Exar Kuun’s story unfolds. Seeing the Great Sith War come to pass, as well as how it ends, would be a very intriguing experience, especially if we get to see more Jedi and Sith characters that were part of the events that took place during the war. But even more so, seeing Exar Kuun go from being a Jedi Knight to falling to the dark side from his own obsession with forbidden knowledge would make for a different kind of story for Star Wars games. Many titles stay with characters that end up being good in the end, but Exar Kuun would be irredeemable and go down as one of the most infamous Sith in the galaxy.

There are so many other characters and stories that would make for great Star Wars games to play. It’s almost impossible to run out of material that would make the foundation of a great video game. As more parts of the Star Wars galaxy are explored for new canon entries across various media, I want to see more elements from Star Wars Legends utilized in different ways, following up on characters that people have loved for a long time. There would definitely be things that need to change in order to fit within the established new canon from Lucasfilm and Disney, but not exploring what these Expanded Universe stories have to offer would be leaving a lot of unique opportunities for games on the table. The Star Wars galaxy is a very wide place, and there’s still so much we haven’t gotten to play in yet.
