Dangerous driver blamed fox after flipping nan’s Mercedes and injuring two women

A young driver high on drugs clipped a car while overtaking, causing his vehicle to flip and land on top of another car, leaving two women inside seriously injured.

Tyler Luckhurst was at the wheel of his nan’s blue Mercedes C200 in Lower Road, Minster, just before 8pm on September 15 last year.

He had overtaken at speed and crashed into another vehicle being driven in the opposite direction.

The then 22-year-old then did a runner as Johanne Bangs and Lesley Hobman lay injured in their damaged vehicle.

He later said the collision had been caused by a fox which ran out into the road.

The two women suffered broken bones and one suffered a punctured lung.

The air ambulance was called and the route was temporarily closed between Scocles Road and Thistle Hill Way while emergency services attended.

The injured women were taken to hospital by land ambulance.

Luckhurst, of William Street, Sittingbourne, was charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He admitted the offences when he appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on July 23.

Victoria Aked, prosecuting, said: “It’s too serious to be dealt with here and should be sent to the crown court.

“He was 22 years and seven months when it happened, and he was driving the Mercedes in Minster-on-Sea.

“There is one way in and one way out (the road to Minster) and we say his driving was dangerous as he was driving in excess of the speed limit and he then overtook a car and clipped a car as he did so, and this flipped his car and that landed on another.

“Two ladies suffered significant injuries, he had three drugs in his system, cocaine, ketamine and Benzoylecgonine (a cocaine by-product), but he’s not been charged with drug offences.

“He flees the scene and later blames a fox for getting in his way. We say he made a deliberate decision to ignore the rules of the road. He made a highly dangerous manoeuvre and he was impaired by drugs.”

The court heard that both women in the other car had suffered fractured bones, and one suffered a punctured lung and was still in pain 10 months later.

Ms Aked added: “It was his nan’s Mercedes car and he has no previous convictions, but had six points on his licence for no insurance the year before.”

Magistrates agreed the case should be sent to the crown court to be dealt with and said Luckhurst would be sentenced there at a later date. They placed him on an interim driving ban and ordered a pre-sentencing report be carried out. The date of his hearing at Maidstone Crown Court was yet to be determined.
