Ubisoft cancels Star Wars Outlaws 2 before production begins

Ubisoft has reportedly canceled Star Wars Outlaws 2, according to insider Tom Henderson on the Insider Gaming Weekly podcast. The sequel was in very early development, but never entered full production. This decision follows the underwhelming performance of the original Star Wars Outlaws, which sold only around 1 million copies in its first month, far below Ubisoft’s expectations.

Why the sequel was scrapped

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot attributed the failure to a decline in interest in the Star Wars brand, though many fans and critics pointed to technical issues, lack of content, and poor optimization as the real culprits. The game’s rocky launch led Ubisoft to delay Assassin’s Creed Shadows to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

Despite the cancellation, Star Wars Outlaws will still release on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4, 2025, featuring performance improvements and two DLCs: Wild Card and A Pirate’s Fortune.

With Outlaws 2 shelved, Ubisoft may be rethinking its approach to licensed IPs. The company still has major titles in the pipeline, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Claws of Awaji, its upcoming DLC.
