GPD Win 5 Might be the Most Powerful Handheld Gaming PC Yet, Powered by Ryzen AI Max+ 395 Strix

GPD Win 5 Handheld Gaming PC
GPD, known for their small yet powerful gaming devices, is introducing the GPD Win 5 at ChinaJoy 2025. This handheld gaming PC packs high-end laptop performance into a compact design.

It’s powered by the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 from AMD’s Strix Halo series, a 16-core, 32-thread CPU and Radeon 8060S graphics with 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units. This integrated GPU is on par with mid-range discrete graphics cards, scoring 10,366 in 3DMark TimeSpy – about 3 times faster than the Radeon 890M in other handhelds. The secondary option, the Ryzen AI Max 385 with 8 cores and 32 GPU compute units, is a more affordable option with decent performance.

Cooling the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 55W default TDP adjustable from 45W to 120W is managed by 2 fans and 4 heat pipes. Tests show temperatures of 64-66°C during gaming, and users can lower the power to 15W for lighter tasks to improve battery life as well as reduce heat.

The Win 5’s battery design is different from the traditional approach, it doesn’t have an internal battery, instead it has an external 80 watt-hour “backpack” or 180W wall charger. The battery is about 4 inches by 4 inches by 0.7 inches and connects via a dedicated port, which makes it bulkier than the Win 4’s 6-inch, 45 watt-hour design. This external design allows swappable batteries for continuous play and easy replacements for repairs.

The controls are designed for precision with dual analog sticks, D-Pad, 4 action buttons, shoulder triggers, fingerprint sensor and optical fingerprint sensor as touchpad. Stereo front-facing speakers for clear sound and new buttons near the screen and relocated volume controls for better usability during gameplay.

Memory options are 32GB, 64GB or 128GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 4TB of M.2 NVMe SSD storage for fast loading and plenty of storage. Connectivity includes a USB-4 port with 100W Power Delivery and 8K/60Hz DisplayPort output and an OCuLink port for external GPU docks.

Pricing is not yet announced but Strix Halo devices are often above $2,000, so the Win 5’s high-end Ryzen AI Max+ 395 model might start above $1,500 compared to the Win 4’s $1,172 for a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.
