Obsidian Entertainment has announced a price cut for The Outer Worlds 2, bucking the growing $80 price trend that companies like Nintendo have embraced in recent times.
Video game publishers have been pushing for $80 game prices for a while now, with Nintendo making the jump during the Switch 2 generation. Naturally, consumers aren’t happy about this, especially when it’s a company like Nintendo, which rarely has its mainline games appear in sales.

Mario Kart World Not Worth The Price Tag According To Fans
Mario Kart World’s dedicated Nintendo Direct has been met with scorn by fans, mostly due to its highly inflated price tag compared to the new content.
Microsoft has been a huge proponent of $80 games, but it seems that parts of Xbox Game Studios want to cut prices. A post on the Obsidian BlueSky channel has confirmed that The Outer Worlds 2 won’t be launching at $80. Instead, it will be released for $69.99.
Dear Galactic Citizens! We have received your SOS via skip drone about the pricing. The Outer Worlds Won’t Be An $80 Title

The post ties the price cut into the lore of the games, without explaining the real-life reasons why the cut was made. Perhaps Microsoft realized that an $80 price tag for a title that’s coming to Game Pass is an easy to make sure no one buys the game on their platforms.
Whatever the case, it’s a step in the right direction. The gaming public has made its feelings on $80 titles known, and this could be part of a larger rollback across the industry. It certainly makes sense not to launch The Outer Worlds 2 at that high a price, considering it’s a relatively niche RPG shooter franchise, even with the Obsidian name behind it.
Even if the industry as a whole backs down from $80 (and there’s certainly no indication that Nintendo is doing that), it likely won’t be gone for good. When Grand Theft Auto 6 launches, there will be tons of speculation about whatever ridiculous cost “experts” thing it’s going to launch at, and that will be the perfect time for companies to start sliding the prices up again.
