The Nintendo Switch 2 has become the fastest-selling video game hardware in US history since its global launch on June 5, 2025, according to data from market research company Circana. This is despite the console launching at $449.99 in the country, which is $150 more than the original Nintendo Switch.
“Nintendo Switch 2 sold 1.6M units in June, the highest launch month unit sales for video game hardware in US history,” wrote Circana Executive Editor Mat Piscatella on Bluesky. “The previous high was the 1.1M units of PlayStation 4 sold during November 2013.”

Speaking with IGN, Piscatella added that “What the launch sales of Switch 2 primarily tell us is that they made a lot of Switch 2 to sell at launch.” While the analyst also pointed out that record launch sales do not necessarily guarantee great lifetime sales, Piscatella said that “having the biggest launch month sales for any new video game hardware platform is a helluva good start.”
The Nintendo Switch 2 launched with one blockbuster exclusive game, Mario Kart World, which was the #3 best-selling game in the US in June after Elden Ring: Nightreign and the PS5 exclusive Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Nintendo was criticized for pricing the game at $79.99, which is $20 more than the standard price for original Switch games. However, Circana’s data shows that it was still a hit with consumers.
Donkey Kong Bananza, the second big exclusive Nintendo Switch 2 game, was released last week and received critical acclaim with a 91 score on Metacritic. At $69.99, the game is also $10 cheaper than Mario Kart World, and it should also sell really well.
