Grounded 2 Isn’t Out Yet, but Obsidian has “Ideas” for a Trilogy

Grounded 2 may be just a short length of an ant away from releasing into early access, but executive producer Marcus Morgan has told Eurogamer that, while he is unsure if it will actually happen, that there aspirations within Obsidian Entertainment to make Grounded into a trilogy into the future. Of course, there are a million different aspects at play here, but when the original game first popped up in 2022, it was a surprise success. Many players jumped into the game that was essentially a survival take on Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

Grounded 2 has New Features, but Obsidian has More in the Wings

Now, just a few years following that initial launch, Grounded 1 is complete. Over time, it received expansions to its backyard that let players explore some pretty harrowing areas if you have any problems with bugs. With Grounded 2, the kids have been moved to a city park, but the biggest addition to the game seems to be the addition of “Buggies,” or mountable bugs. Apparently, the move to the park was to facilitate this new feature, since the backyard wasn’t built for traversing on the back of a bug. According to Morgan, there is plenty more left in the tank for where the series could go.

Unlike some other survival games like Ark or Minecraft, which are always being added to, Grounded has always had the basic story idea of having a beginning, a middle, and an end. We saw that in the first game, and plans are in place to do it with Grounded 2. While Morgan doesn’t want to commit to the idea of a third Grounded being made, which is fair, considering the way Xbox has been handling their portfolio lately, the “ideas and stories and expansions and features that we would want to go for” are there.

With Grounded 2, development help has come in from Eidos Montreal, who made the Guardians of the Galaxy game, and have a history of Deus Ex and Tomb Raider games. According to Morgan, there are actually more people from Eidos than Obsidian working on the sequel, but the entire team from the original game remains here. It seems that the way that worked out was just a product of how small the original Grounded team is and how busy Obsidian has been with Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. Hopefully, this partnership remains strong and will help facilitate a successful launch and life for Grounded 2, which could lead to a third game in the future.
