One Tottenham Hotspur youngster has been linked with a move away from North London, but letting him go would be a monumental mistake.
Anyone who has been reading Spurs Web opinion pieces recently will be aware of the frustration we have expressed over Tottenham academy graduates not being given a fair chance.
One recent article discussed Tottenham’s decision to sell Josh Keeley to Luton Town. The goalkeeper never made a senior appearance for the club.
Few would have expected that the next academy graduate who could be on the move is none other than Mikey Moore. Still weeks away from his 18th birthday, Moore has already made a name for himself at Spurs.Â
He has become a more frequent name in the Tottenham first-team squad, although he only made 10 Premier League appearances last season. Most of these were from off the bench, and while he was kept out by a lengthy illness, Moore was clearly withheld by Ange Postecoglou, perhaps for his own protection.
Mikey Moore is being linked with a Tottenham exit
Borussia Dortmund have been linked with Mikey Moore for a couple of months and the chances of a deal being agreed look to be increasing.Â
Moore is open to switching Spurs for the Bundesliga giants and some reports suggest that Tottenham would be willing to include an option to buy in any loan deal for the winger.
Other reports suggest Spurs are unlikely to sanction a sale for Moore. However, they have not ruled out a potential loan deal for the 2024/25 campaign.Â
Moore should be kept in the Spurs first-team squad
The transfer news on Moore is concerning because where are Tottenham at their weakest? The lack of depth in the centre forward position is a concern. Another full-back would prove a useful addition to the Tottenham first-team squad. However, the left wing is the area which looks the most concerning if Moore is taken out of the equation.
Richarlison wants to stay at Tottenham, but even if he does, his injury history has often restricted him since he made the move from Everton. There is also Heung-min Son, another player who has been linked with a move away from Spurs. Apparently, he is not central to the plans of Thomas Frank.
Mathys Tel is the other option, and there is a reason he did not play a single minute in the Europa League final. His loan spell at Tottenham was certainly not a disaster, but he is yet to show that he is first-team quality.Â
The same could be said of Moore, but his chances have been more limited. The only reason Tel is a Tottenham player is because Bayern Munich allowed him to display his talents. Spurs must do the same with Moore and give him an opportunity in the first team.
Would a loan move benefit Mikey Moore?
In fairness, a loan move to a club like Borussia Dortmund could be a great opportunity for Moore, as long as he was joining as a first-team starter. However, he could be fulfilling this role at Tottenham, due to the concerns highlighted in his preferred position.
Neither Son nor Richarlison are likely to be part of Frank’s long-term plans. Therefore, he should look at potential future stars and give them their opportunity now.Â
If Moore is used correctly, he will be able to develop just as well at Spurs as he would anywhere else. You can’t help but look at Phil Foden and Manchester City as the perfect example of how to introduce a youngster into a top Premier League team without pushing him too far, too soon.
