10 The Golden Gun (GoldenEye 007)

Leave them shaken, not stirred

Anybody who has played GoldenEye 007 multiplayer on the Nintendo 64 is very familiar with the Golden Gun. It’s a weapon that appears in the James Bond 007 series of films and the game, serving as a reference to them, most specifically The Man with the Golden Gun from 1974. In the game, the weapon appears in both the single-player missions and multiplayer, and is devastatingly powerful.

The Golden Gun can take down enemies instantly with one bullet, but needs to reload after being used. If one is careful with their aim, they can stockpile kills with ease. However, the gun only appears in one mission of the main campaign of GoldenEye 007, but can be accessed for the rest of the game through the use of cheat codes. The weapon appears in other 007 games in varying capacities, often as a weapon in multiplayer modes that must be obtained.

9 Dagger of Time (Prince of Persia)

Controlling the sands of time

What if you could control how things happen by going back in time to change them? That’s the power that comes with wielding the Dagger of Time from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The weapon appears throughout the Prince of Persia series and is a key component to the overarching story of the Sands of Time trilogy of games. The dagger allows the user to control the flow of time, thereby avoiding attacks and other hazards that might harm them. Its power can be replenished by refilling it with sands of time found throughout the games, giving the user more power over how time progresses.

While the Dagger of Time can be used to manipulate time, its effects can still be harmful to the user, which is why two other artifacts can be used in conjunction with the dagger to negate them. Overusing the dagger carelessly can provoke the attention of the Dahaka, an entity whose mission is to maintain the natural order of time.

8 Blades of Chaos (God of War)

Letting the rage flow

The God of War series features numerous powerful weapons used by its protagonist, Kratos. But none of them are as iconic as the Blades of Chaos, which are figuratively and literally tied to Kratos in a big way. These are weapons that Kratos uses throughout the series, and are responsible for bringing down many Greek monsters and deities. The Blades of Chaos have the ability to channel energy drawn from another realm, allowing Kratos to use magical attacks like the Olympians. The blades can also absorb the life force from their victims, further boosting Kratos’ power and abilities.

In each saga of the God of War series, the Blades of Chaos make an appearance and are used by Kratos in combat. In the reboot of the series in 2018, Kratos goes back to his home to recover the Blades of Chaos after locking them away for a long time. Throughout God of War and God of War Ragnarök, Kratos finds various uses for the Blades of Chaos to get around obstacles, as well as fight tougher foes that appear.

7 Master Sword (The Legend of Zelda)

The sword of evil’s bane

One of the most famous video game weapons of all-time is the Master Sword from the Zelda series. The first appearance of the Master Sword is in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and has since become a staple of the series. The sword is a powerful weapon that has the ability to hurt evil forces that threaten the peace of Hyrule, often being used to trap evil in another realm. When it was created, the Master Sword was infused with sacred fire from the goddess Hylia and blessed by her power. In multiple games within The Legend of Zelda series, evil characters like Ganon fear the power of the Master Sword, and its wielder. The sword can also break down magical barriers and powerful curses that were made with dark magic. In addition, Link has been able to use powerful strikes in games like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, often by holding up the blade and swiping down to the ground.

In some games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the Master Sword is tied to traveling between time periods, allowing Link to advance through time and grow older. But in every game that features the Master Sword, Link must undergo a series of trials to obtain it. In Ocarina of Time, Link must find three stones to open up the Temple of Time, where the Master Sword is set inside a stone. As a traditional fantasy weapon, the Master Sword is the go-to piece of equipment for heroes of Hyrule. After all, it’s dangerous to go alone without it.

6 Portal Gun (Portal)

Shifting perspectives around

If there’s one weapon that’s powerful, yet incredibly fun to wield, it’s definitely the Portal Gun. It comes from the game Portal by Valve in 2007, and is used to get around challenges in the Aperture Science test facility. The gun itself was created by Aperture Science as an experimental tool for the Test Chambers. Many people have compared this weapon to the Gravity Gun from the Half-Life series, but it’s very different in design and application.

The Portal Gun can fire two portals that connect to each other, allowing the user to travel from one location to another. Depending on the position of the portals, the user can enable a wide range of effects between two points. The gun can also pick up certain objects in front of the user, allowing them to also push them away or carry them around. This is helpful for navigating various obstacles and puzzles within Portal. Unfortunately, the Portal Gun can only fire two portals at a time, and can only work on surfaces that are immobile.

5 The R.Y.N.O. (Ratchet & Clank)

Know what it stands for

The strongest weapon that appears throughout the Ratchet & Clank series is the R.Y.N.O. launcher. This is a weapon that fires multiple rockets at a given target, bombarding it with massive explosions without prejudice. The name of the weapon is an acronym that encompasses the spirit of the weapon as a whole. What does R.Y.N.O. stand for? It’s the phrase “Rip Ya New One”, and it’s a perfect statement of how damaging the weapon can be against enemies.

The first appearance of the R.Y.N.O. was in Ratchet & Clank for the PlayStation 2 in 2002. It can be sold to Ratchet by a black market salesman when purchased for the one-time price of 150,000 bolts. The weapon appears multiple times throughout the series, with even more devastatingly powerful iterations. When it comes to taking down an enemy, that’s blocking your way, you know what phrase you’ll be telling them with this weapon.

4 Blue Shell (Mario Kart)

It will find you anywhere

The Mario Kart games can get very competitive, especially when racing on the tougher tracks throughout the series. But there’s one item that all Mario Kart players fear when someone throws it out: the Blue Shell. This powerful item, which is also known as the Spiny Shell, seeks out the racer positioned in first place and hits them with an explosion that knocks them down. The Blue Shell can’t be used by those who are in the lead of a race, but it can appear for everyone else when driving through a Question Block on the track.

Some skilled players can avoid being hit by the Blue Shell when it’s launched at them, but only if they’re really lucky. In most Mario Kart games, it always spells bad news for the person leading the race when the icon for a Blue Shell pops up after being launched. It’s an item responsible for many arguments among friends, and many races have been lost due to ill timing. You can run from it, but you can’t hide from it. And you can’t stop a Blue Shell from hitting someone on the racetrack.

3 The Keyblade (Kingdom Hearts)

A key to unlocking worlds

In the collaboration between Square Enix and Disney, a legendary weapon was born for the Kingdom Hearts series. The Keyblade is one of the most iconic video game weapons of all time, with its unique design. In the Kingdom Hearts series, many characters use multiple variations of the Keyblade, often with different attachments and abilities tied to it. As a weapon, the Keyblade can be used to fight the Heartless and Nobodies, as well as other types of enemies that appear in multiple locations. However, the main purpose of the Keyblade is to unlock or seal barriers to other worlds, as well as lock the heart of a world away from enemies like the Heartless, preventing them from being overrun. In different games, the Keyblade also displays varying powers tied to the alignment of characters, whether they are utilizing powers of Light or Darkness in different ways during combat.

The main character of the series, Sora, possesses the main design of the Keyblade and wields an arsenal of its powers. It can change form and function depending on the world that Sora visits, often taking on unique designs that are themed to a variety of franchises. Luckily for everyone, the Keyblade can also open up different locks and treasure chests that Sora finds on his travels. In games like Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, the Keyblade has the ability to give the user a glider to travel between worlds, but has only been used by characters who appear in that game. As a blend of elements from the Final Fantasy series and Disney stories, the Keyblade is truly a fantasy weapon of strange worlds.

2 Chronoscepter (Turok: Dinosaur Hunter)

An ancient weapon of time

The definitive, most powerful weapon in Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is the Chronoscepter. It is an ancient weapon that emits blasts powerful enough to create micro-tears in the fabric of time, unleashing an unimaginably strong amount of energy. The weapon originally appeared in the first game of the Turok series on the Nintendo 64. To use it, pieces of the weapon needed to be collected throughout each level and assembled at the end, where it could be used in the final boss encounter against The Campaigner. There are eight parts of the Chronoscepter that need to be gathered before it can be used.

The Chronoscepter is very powerful, but its ammo cannot be replenished normally in the game, which is limited to three shots. At the same time, the weapon has a massive blast radius to go with its power, which can damage the user if they aren’t far enough away from the blast. In the final battle against the Campaigner, one hit from the Chronoscepter can deplete a huge portion of the enemy’s health with a direct shot. The weapon has only ever appeared twice in the series, in the first Turok game and in Turok: Battle of the Binosaurus for the Nintendo Game Boy.

1 The BFG 9000 (Doom)

The weapon to end them all

The original most powerful weapon ever in a video game is the BFG 9000 from the Doom series. It’s a weapon that is incredibly powerful and capable of clearing out rooms of demons with ease. In most Doom games, the acronym B.F.G. stands for “big f*ckin’ gun”, as a testament to its destructive power. In the 2015 Doom movie, the name was changed to “Bio Force Gun”, but the name is not considered canon to the games. Using the BFG takes energy ammo in every game, which makes the weapon even more of a threat because of how easy it is to replenish ammunition.

Later Doom games have introduced variations of the weapon, often with even more destructive power. It is often an inspiration for other FPS titles that model their gameplay after Doom, which include weapons that act very similarly. The only game in the series that doesn’t include the BFG 9000 under normal conditions is the Sega 32X port of the original Doom, which requires a cheat code to use the weapon. However, doing so prevents the game from showing the true ending and forces a DOS screen to appear when completing the final battle. To many players, the BFG 9000 is the undisputed most powerful video game weapon of all time.

Geared up for any occasion

Video games feature a wide range of weapons and equipment that have captured the imaginations of players. After all, who doesn’t love the fantasy of wielding a powerful weapon against the forces of evil? Despite their destructive power, these fantastical weapons often appear unique to the worlds they originate from and become memorable for players. Some of the strongest weapons come from games that people love to play and often revisit, adding to their legendary status and frequent reminders of how awesome they really are.
