Newcastle United set Tottenham a target to beat in the bidding for Yoane Wissa

Newcastle United have made the first move in the battle for Yoane Wissa, but Tottenham Hotspur are still in the race for the forward.

It was only revealed a few hours ago that Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Yoane Wissa had left Brentford’s pre-season training camp amid increasing speculation over his future.

It is understood that Wissa is set to hold talks with Brentford director of football Phil Giles regarding his next steps, having rejected the club’s offer of a new contract.

With just 12 months remaining on his current deal, this summer represents a pivotal moment for Brentford, as they risk losing the DR Congo international on a free transfer if fresh terms are not agreed.

Newcastle make opening £25m bid for Tottenham target Yoane Wissa

Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur are the clubs showing the most concrete interest in Yoane Wissa this summer.

Reports earlier today suggested that Newcastle are moving the quickest among the trio in their efforts to secure a deal for the Brentford forward.

David Ornstein has now revealed that Eddie Howe’s side have submitted a £25m offer for Wissa, which Brentford have swiftly turned down.

Despite the rejection, it is understood that Newcastle remain in pursuit, with personal terms not expected to be a stumbling block for the 28-year-old forward.

Spurs still in the mix despite Newcastle interest in Wissa

Tottenham Hotspur have not suffered defeat in the race for Wissa just yet, especially as Newcastle’s opening offer has already been rejected.

In fact, it was reported just days ago that Tottenham’s interest in Wissa was more advanced than Newcastle’s. BBC Sport also claimed that Wissa was refusing to sign a new Brentford contract amid interest from Spurs, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest.

Brentford are thought to be holding out for a fee in the region of £40m for the forward, who could be sold if their valuation is met before the end of the window.

Wissa enjoyed his best season under Thomas Frank last term, netting 19 goals in the Premier League. If Tottenham are serious about securing the 28-year-old’s signature, they will need to put forward a substantial offer to tempt Brentford into selling.
