After revealing Trenches VR last week, Steelkrill Studio and publisher Prep Games are already giving gamers a taste of gameplay with a new trailer, demonstrating some of the actions you’ll need to take in order to survive the hellscape behind enemy lines.
In addition to the new trailer, the developers have said that they’ve been listening to player feedback and as a result, have been pushing the immersion in Trenches VR “to new heights.” With their newest build, the team has made progress in the following areas:
- Full Arm Tracking: Your arms now follow your real-world movements for increased realism and physical interaction.
- Revamped Inventory System: The backpack system has been refined, and intrusive inventory text has been removed for a cleaner, more immersive UI.
- Enhanced Visuals: Several in-game models now feature upgraded textures and lighting for a grittier, more visceral experience.
- Improved Player Navigation: Footstep responsiveness and movement have been made smoother to better reflect the tension of navigating tight, haunted trenches.
- Better Enemy: Enemy models have been redesigned, and their pathfinding has been improved for more unpredictable and intense encounters.
- Voice Detection Mechanics: Enemies can now hear your actual voice through your headset’s microphone. A subtle visual cue appears near your hands when you make sound — so tread carefully and speak softly.
Coming to PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest 2/3, and SteamVR later this year, Trenches VR sees you having to navigate and escape a procedurally-generated labyrinthine trench behind enemy lines. Your only motivation is to return to your family. In order to find your way out, you’ll need to make use of your whistle to navigate the trenches.
However, as you might expect, the enemies can hear your whistle. In addition to your whistle, thanks to Trenches VR making use of your mic, the enemies can hear your breathing, whispers, and cries for help. They’ll also be able to hear if you walk on wood, or if you break any bottles. Not only that, all the while you’re being haunted and hunted by a malevolent force that feeds on your fear.
